About this deal

Bryce Oakley gives a great no fake angst story about mutual attraction that brings friendship and an inner strength to the MC. A "file MD5" is a hash that gets computed from the file contents, and is reasonably unique based on that content. Oakley is at her best depicting the collaboration and music and I liked how she showed the intent and message of the lyrics but only gave enough detail to see refining and honing without giving so much that you get bogged down in trying to see it as an actual song. The communication of real feelings is a bit of an issue though and I know it is to keep the drama and angst going in the book, but also for the life of me I just want to yell "talk to each other and don't assume! You aren’t going to convince me that “No, but you’re a fancy person, so the possibility of escargot has escar-lated” is anything other than permanent literary canon dialogue at this point.

sighs* If she were real, I'd be swooning over her and getting protective of her, much like Sage does.

My top tropes are friends to lovers and fauxmance, and Oakley gives us a marvellous combination of the two. It’s interesting because more often than not fauxmance books tend to have a main character who is a bit of an ice queen. You can count on her to stay late to pack up after a party, take on extra work and generally be reliable. The story leads the reader through a textbook (in the best possible way) setup, confusion, angst, romance, and ultimately, the gratifying “big moment” that isn’t always done well in books. I like the description of the way Billie "invites" her muse as well as the lyrics diary and I have also enjoyed the description of the atmosphere in the studio, when they record the demo. She glanced around the room, and Willa wondered if she was trying to find an out to their conversation. By the way, this story actually makes you think that there are a few people that are worthy to fight for. She was staring down the snack table, trying to determine why the carrots were making her so depressed.

Undone (The Kaleidoscope Album Book 1) by Bryce Oakley Undone (The Kaleidoscope Album Book 1) by Bryce Oakley

So this is a book that's been sitting on my Kindle for a hot minute, and I finally decided to read it this weekend. Vero De Luca, daughter of a famous singer-star, Felix Lucas, has just quit her band, UltraViolet, and is about to launch her solo career. I’m shocked they even remembered vegetables,” Sage said, her voice much deeper and scratchier than Willa had remembered. But when the lines between real and fake start to blur, will they be able to keep the growing heat between them just a game, or will they start playing to win? Sage had much shorter hair now, but it was still the mop of messy dark strands that she’d remembered. Though she knows she’s fully capable of writing her own songs, the label insists that her first single needs a major name behind it, not just her own.

I realised with this book that I also love it when both characters are nice people that I want to cheer on. Songwriting with Vero was a change-up and unexpected and likely to be a pain, but it was better than nothing and it stood a chance of draining the pop songs that her muse had been throwing up at her since her normal collaborator had gone dry.Reading on Kindle so assumed 10% left, but no, that was the first couple of chapters of book 2 - yea, it's a series, bet you didn't know that! I also enjoyed the development of their friendship, their banter and the real connection to a more profound relationship, but I thought the conflict lasted too long and the ending was too quick. So I don't think the relationship really gelled as well as it could have and the whole dark moment felt flat and a bit tedious going through it. Sure, she’s a soccer star with World Cup trophies and Olympic medals, but she’s almost as well known for her rebellious behavior off the pitch.
