About this deal

More than half of local authorities reported “an increase in both unbagged dog poo left on the ground and bagged dog poo, for example left hanging from railings or trees” since the start of 2021, in a recent survey by Keep Britain Tidy. But experts say it goes further than the canine population increase with the rise in discarded dog poo the most visible symptom of a new generation of dog owners. Keep Britain Tidy has campaigned very successfully on the issue of dog fouling. In 2010, our high-profile ‘There’s no such thing as the dog poo fairy’ led to massive reductions in dog fouling in participating council areas. Some communities saw a decrease of up to 90%, while on average a reduction of 43% was recorded across the 94 participating local authorities. Part of this new life involved getting a dog for a family pet. As pet owners yourself you will know that along with all the good things a dog can bring to a family they also bring a lot of crap (and I mean that literally).

It’s no wonder dog fouling is such a problem – there are estimated to be more than 8 million dogs producing more than 1,000 tonnes of mess every day in the UK alone. These walks typically take her between three and eight hours a month and take in two beaches in Tor Bay, woodland, residential areas and public paths. After considering the above, we decided to make our poo bags from 20% oyster shell waste, 50% recycled plastic and up to 30% virgin plastic. So instead of making new plastic that contributes to landfill or incineration, we re-use waste (plastic and oyster shells) that was already destined to end up there. In this way, they do genuinely free up landfill space and reduce waste going to incineration overall. Our bags are recyclable, however due to the contents, sadly they cannot be placed in recycling and are intended for general waste!

Reusable poo bags - Yes they are a thing! However, these are best for people who can take their dog's poop home to compost it. Why recycled plastic? The manufacture of recycled plastic requires less energy and produces fewer carbon emissions compared to compostable plastic. It also reduces the amount of plastic ending up in the open environment, landfill or incineration by capturing and re-using it. In total, this failure to properly dispose of dog poo leads to an estimated 53 tonnes of excrement a day being left on the ground or in bags in UK parks alone – enough to fill four refuse lorries, according to that report, which surveyed 1,225 adult dog owners across the UK. Typically, training should start as early as possible, once puppies have completed their vaccinations (usually around 12-14 weeks old), but owners can start basic training at home. Full dog poo bags must be disposed of properly and not simply left as litter. All dog poo bags should be taken to a suitable bin – even if it means carrying them for the whole walk. We recommend using a dog poo holding pouch if you are on a long walk. These tend to be treated to contain any smell. The best dog poo bags on test hold the poo in the hand you throw the ball with running the risk of a poo spillage (don’t even think about it).But you're a responsible dog owner who wants to do what they can for the environment and you realise that your poo bag usage is a big contributor to your dog's environmental pawprint.

Half of the councils are also having to empty bins more frequently as a result of people correctly binning their dogs’ poo, the survey found. Of course, the best way to avoid this from happening is to ensure your dog doesn't get the “runs” by feeding them a well-balanced and correct diet. But, dogs do get upset tummies from time to time no matter how careful you are and the best way to scoop their loose “doings” up is to cover it with loose dirt or sand before scooping it up into a bag. So what happens to compostable or biodegradable plastic in landfill? We were horrified to learn that not only would they potentially take years (possibly centuries) to breakdown in landfill, they would also produce methane, a highly potent greenhouse gas. When we spoke with Dr Carly Fletcher, a Bioplastics researcher from Manchester Metropolitan University, Dr Fletcher advised the difference between plastic and compostable/biodegradable plastic in incineration was likely negligible. However we found one study showing PBAT (the main ingredient in compostable and biodegradable poo bags) releases significantly more carcinogens than standard plastic when incinerated. So what are the options, considering the above?I realised this wasn’t a problem only I suffered, when one day sitting in car after walking my dog I saw 4 other people go through the almost identical ritual I had done 1 hour earlier. Dogs being dogs love nothing better than finding something particularly disgusting to eat which can result in them having a very upset stomach. With this said, our canine companions can also have a bout of diarrhoea for other reasons too, but for whatever reason they do, taking them out for a walk and cleaning up their mess can be more than a little challenging! There’s not a one-size-fits-all for training, and a dog’s needs will vary depending on a number of factors.
