About this deal

Another brilliant Islington outdoor bar, The Castle’s rooftop terrace makes quite the spot for a chilled-out drink or three with friends.

This is key for a wine brand like Amie. “We are a brand so we haven’t got that 200-year family story of owning a chateau in the South of France,” Sandbach says, meaning its more a question of “storytelling” about the brand and its aesthetic than about a long history. Amie is hosting its opening party this week in Seoul, and will trial a new rosé cremant in the South Korean market before launching it in the UK. If you want to flex your knowledge of London’s fabulous bar scene, then you’d best get yourself a table at sought-after Happiness Forgets, one of London’s hottest bars.Amie has experienced significant growth since its inception, and Roden and Sandbach have extended the range from one rosé to six different wines. The pair are also keen on exports, with established importers in Australia, Norway and Singapore, and plans to launch in the US in July.

When building out the brand plan for amie, I knew that I wanted the brand to be a few things: beautiful, aspirational, elevated, and something for everyone - we wanted everyone to feel like they could drink amie. The name 'amie' is 'female friend' in French - we're 'a wine for friends' and want to feel like a community of friends. Elevated photography and visuals have been a huge part of our brand, and connecting with our customers has been a real way for us to create more of a lifestyle vs purely just a wine brand. Influencer Marketing and Brand Partnerships have been a huge part of building amie, and from the beginning, we have focused on partnering with fashion and lifestyle people and brands, instead of purely the wine world. We had an opportunity to open a wine bar, amie wine studio , in June 2022, and this has been a huge step for us in terms of creating a lifestyle brand; we're able to collaborate with other brands in the space, host community events for our customers, and connect with people in a way that we never would have been able to if it weren't for amie wine studio. What has been your biggest learning to date as a founder? It gets better – they’ve covered the terrace for the winter months. Meaning you can still grab a drink with your mates… without freezing your tits off. Now, Amie is launching a second physical space in the South Korean capital of Seoul, its biggest export market. Sandbach believes that Korean consumers are more open to up-and-coming wine brands than more mature and established wine markets, making it the perfect place for expansion. amie wine studio Seoul is a wine bar, wine shop (you can buy bottles to takeaway), coffee + brunch spot, restaurant for delicious British-Korean fusion small plates, and an art gallery. An amie merch boutique will soon open as well. Several events and workshops will also be hosted in the space, just as in our London space. During Wimbledon (27th June – 10th July), there will be an outdoor bar and lounge in the courtyard. Watch the all the matches whilst sampling Amie’s four signature wines. Seoul therefore creates a new opportunity for young wine brands to grow alongside demand, as awareness and education rise. “Some people are learning about wine more and I think they’re more open to brands as well. That’s something we’re leaning heavily on,” he says.

The latest addition to the family, Amie Wine Studio, blends the beauty of wine and art. A space for you and your friends to come together and enjoy a glass of Amie in the vibrant Eccleston Yards. Located upstairs from Lyaness at Sea Containers, 12th Knothas the additional allure of being a rooftop view. Hidden away atop one of London’s oldest and best-respected restaurants, Upstairs at Rules is a serious delight. The older sister of Vinegar Yard is just a short hop, skip and stroll away in Southwark but also sports a sizable beer garden/terrace for those days when hanging in the park with a tinnie just isn’t the vibe you’re going for. Although the grapes are French, amie is actually a London-based operation, the work of a wine-loving couple, with the support from a few friends (hence the name) who decided to create a drinkable rosé together. And thankfully, they didn’t bottle it. Well, they did but, you know, in a good way. It’s all vegan, and they’ve added to their original run of rosé with an organic number, a fruity red (Carignan), some refreshing whites (Sauvignan Blanc & Chardonnay), and a delicately sparkling Crémant De Limoux. Umm-ing and ahh-ing over what to get? Just try them all – their ‘taste of amie’ flight includes all five still wines.

This Scottish eatery has gone way past the point of mere Highland fling, and is having a full Scottish love affair. Their Belgravia branch, just behind Victoria station, is a warren of drinking dens, dining rooms, a courtyard and cigar terrace; each liberally scattered with tartan and Scottish paraphernalia. Unsurprisingly, there’s a strong whisky collection behind the bar, and there’s also live music every night, spanning jazz, soul and blues (no bagpipes involved). Amie Wine Studio will also serve as a gallery, showcasing exciting emerging artists. You will be able to buy some of the amazing pieces of art as well. Interior-wise, it’s a real wild card. One room is a tranquil Kyoto-inspired space, while another sees a huge stained glass mural of Bowie adorning the walls. It’s weird and we love it.

London collectively gasped in horror when it was announced that Lyaness’s predecessor, Dandelyan, was closing down. It had, after all, been named the best bar in the world.

I feel like I've gotten better over the past few years; I've learned not to take on too much at once. I used to do this and it would cause so much stress and anxiety. I try to switch my phone off in the evenings, and make time to read a chapter before bed; I also love doing a workout at least 2 times a week if I can, although sometimes with my schedule it isn't possible! Finding 'me time' is really important, which I don't think I knew a few years ago. When it comes to actual business challenges, I do find that connecting with other people is great, and hearing other Founders' stories is always really inspiring. Do you have any advice for other founders? The drinks are outstanding (and decently-priced – a big win). Our favourites include the Raspberry Leaf Bellini and the Curry Leaf Stonefence, though feel free to drink your way through the menu. You’re going to want to stay a while. The beer – as you would expect – is great, just wrap up warm ‘cos you’re very much at the mercy of the elements. It’s only open on Saturdays and Sundays. Too much gin can only be a good thing – and don’t the folks at The Distillery know it. Our favourite of their offerings is Gin Tonica, the exceptional bar. amie wine studio Seoul is officially open! 〰️ We spent the last week in Seoul with our team for the opening of amie's new wine bar - amie wine studio Seoul. We started the opening week with an intimate lunch for press, a big opening party, as well as hosting our first-ever event (an art class with Seoul-based artist) in the space.
