About this deal

Our nutrition team here at 28 classify a quality ingredient to mean any food used in its natural form, without manipulation. Does your cereal contain healthy, quality ingredients? Natural flavouring substances (CAC/GL 66-2008 item 2.2.1.1) are flavouring substances obtained by physical processes that may result in unavoidable but unintentional changes in the chemical structure of the components of the flavouring (eg, distillation and solvent extraction), or by enzymatic or microbiological processes, from material of plant or animal origin. Such material may be unprocessed, or processed for human consumption by traditional food-preparation processes (eg, drying, torrefaction (roasting) and fermentation). This means substances that have been identified/detected in a natural material of animal or vegetable origin. Just Right’ from Kelloggs is a perfect example of an unhealthy cereal that people regularly mistake for being good for you. If you take a look at the label, you’ll soon see why.

Sugar-frosted cornflakes are high in sugar and low in fibre as well as usually coming with added salt. Sugar-frosted flakes are usually nutritionally similar to other sweetened cereals like chocolate rice cereals, or honey-nut coated cereals.Swapping to an unsweetened equivalent, like cornflakes or puffed rice, would be a good first step and add a serving of fruit for one of your five- a-day plus some added sweetness. We believe healthy foods are whole foods, as close to their natural form as possible. As natural flavours can legally include a lot of unknown and unlisted ingredients, some of which can even be solvents, we recommend reducing your consumption of ‘natural flavours’ where possible. Just Right is a breakfast cereal produced by Kellogg's. It was created in the 1980s for health-conscious, athletic Australians, who are the world's third-biggest cereal eaters. [1] The cereal is sold in the United Kingdom, Iceland, Ireland, New Zealand and Australia but has been discontinued in other markets. A similarly named cereal with different ingredients (also manufactured by Kellogg's) was available in Canada from 1985 to 2021.

You’ll notice the calories of a standard serving of cereal isn’t in my top 3. This is because, when it comes to your overall health, the quality of the calories you eat is more important than the number of calories you consume.Porridge is our top choice for a heart healthy breakfast – when it is made with low-fat milk or water and unsweetened. All porridge oats are wholegrains and they all contain a soluble fibre called beta-glucan, which can help lower your cholesterol level if you have 3g or more of it daily, as part of a healthy diet. (A 40g serving of porridge oats contains 1.6g of beta-glucan.) As well as this, you’ll be getting the fibre from the whole grains, plus there is no added sugar or salt. No added sugar muesli contains a mixture of grains, fruit and nuts and the combination will differ between brands and varieties so the amount of oat beta glucans will be more variable than porridge, which is made only of oats. The dried fruit that is added should provide all the additional sweetness you need and will also count towards your five a day but choose a muesli with no added sugar and be aware that many fruit and nut mueslis (especially tropical fruit versions) contain sweetened dried fruit, which means they have sugar added even if it isn’t listed separately on the ingredients. Banana chips are another popular muesli ingredient that will contain added sugars and saturated fats. An early commercial for the cereal when sold in the United States has become an internet viral video due to it featuring a then-unknown Tori Amos. For a ready to eat cereal that is an even more heart-healthy start to the day, swap for a shredded whole wheat cereal or no added sugar or salt muesli (see above) as these don’t contain any added sugar or salt.

Healthy is a very general term, and it means something slightly different to everyone; however, as a qualified nutritionist, I have a very clear definition of what a healthy cereal looks like (and why) which I’ll explain in a moment. Wholegrain cereals like bran flakes, malted wheat cereal and wheat biscuits are high in fibre and will also have sugar and salt added to them usually, so avoid adding any more sugar and opt for fruits or berries for sweetness. The wholegrains mean they are high in fibre and so have benefits for your digestion too as well as your heart health. No added sugar or salt muesli To make our findings fair we have analysed the fat, saturated fat, sugar, salt content and calories for 100g portions of each cereal - instead of the individual recommended serving size for adults or children - and haven't included milk. After my two boys were born I decided to go freelance and have written for Good to Know, Woman, Woman & Home and Global Radio, as well as Marks & Spencer and Holland & Barrett. Just Right is composed of whole wheat, corn, and rice flakes, with raisins ( sultanas in Australia), date nuggets and sliced almonds. It is also labelled as vitamin-fortified and low-fat.
