About this deal

Having to deal with a Monster of the week, while trying to save Townies from regular Vampire and Demons, while also under the looming threat of a Big Bad gives a ‘series arc’ feel to the game.

It’s an open information co-op so if you’re playing with others it should be very accessible but maybe a little fiddly to teach. Other items include garlic, crosses and holy water, each with their own abilities that can help you out. Willow can use her special action to discard as many Magic Supplies cards as the player likes, and in turn kill a Demon anywhere on the board for each card discarded.A cardboard standup of the Moon Phase tracker is meant to be set up over it on the board, which allows enough room for the cards to be slid partially underneath it. This system means a player can leap to shield a townie since vampires, demons and other horrible things will always attack the characters. Those looking for a heavy game with groundbreaking gameplay won’t appreciate Buffy and those who aren’t fans of the show may struggle to find the fun. It’s a combination of staid predictability of the baddies and a stochastic inconvenience of the plot related-enemies.

A strategy we quickly learned was using Xander to collect cards, and let him rearm Buffy and Willow while they do the fighting and spell-casting. Every character has a stand-up with their dice written on them, and they're color-coded to their stands and their life meters. Around the board there are life tracks, which you place markers on to keep track of everyone's health (white for good, black for evil). The monster of the week deck consists of a mix of the tougher monsters of the Buffyverse, such as Gnarl, The Judge or Bezoar.Legendary: Buffy The Vampire Slayer has enough strategy to engage players who aren’t familiar with the show, but it’s a far superior experience for fans. Do not get me wrong, the game feels complete in of itself, but it does feel like it can handle more without becoming bloated. Moving is the most obvious, allowing you to jump to any location you like on the board, regardless of whether there are any enemies occupying those areas, although the rulebook does say that for a harder game you can take a wound when leaving a location with baddies in it. Then an Event Card is revealed (one of these is revealed to start the game before the first turn), and this is how the board is populated with Townies, Vampires and Demons, as the card spawns them in specific locations. The Evil cards include Sire a Vampire, which is identical to the process of Staking a Vampire, replacing stakes with fangs, though.

You see, every time a special action token is spent and the action resolved an event card must be flipped over, telling you where new vampires, demons and townies must be placed, as well as hitting players with a usually nasty effect. This duel-sided sidekick means you’ll add your sidekick cards into the deck depending on which one you choose.Fans of Buffy will find a lot to enjoy about this set, but for us it’s one of the weaker line ups so far. The player characters have special abilities that are thematic to the Buffy universe; Giles is good at finding things, Willow can do more stuff with magic, Xander can help everyone, Spike and Buffy are good fighters and Angel is good at manipulating the artefact deck to the players advantage. And the knowledge when you understand is devastating – nothing you do in Buffy is really all that interesting.
