Spend a little more time trying to make something of yourself and a little less time trying to impress people” - Principal Vernon, “The Breakfast Club”

The past fills us in on the present cast and we get a good feel for what has shaped them and who they really are. Sure they have changed in 10 years, who hasn't?! 🤷Yet who are they really? Deep down inside? Not the persona that they have displayed for all their fellow classmates, but they real person they are- when no Ashley Winstead's work is always crammed full of my favorite things: lush prose, twisty plots, and really complicated, nuanced characterization that holds a lantern up to the darkest and brightest spaces within us. Ah, people’s secrets are the best way to get to know them! That’s actually how I dove into each of my characters—I went right for the jugular. Plain jane Jessica Miller always felt like an outsider in their group, not good enough. Even though she dated one of the most popular guys at school, she felt like a fake. Now she is an Upper East Side girl named partner at one of the most sought after positions at a consulting company in NYC. She can't wait for reunion day...to show them all what she has made of herself....no matter what it took...she made it to the top...did the others?

It turns out the real you is a quilt, made up of the light and the dark. The life you’ve lived in sunshine and your shadow life, stretching underneath the surface of your mind like a deep underwater world, exerting invisible power. You are a living, breathing story made up of the moments in time you cherish, all strung together, and those you hide. The moments that seem lost. Until the day they’re not.” They met the first week of college and they promised to be friends forever. To do something great with their wild and precious lives. s ᴀʙɪʟɪᴛʏ ᴛᴏ ᴅᴇᴠᴇʟᴏᴘ ʜᴇʀ ᴄʜᴀʀᴀᴄᴛᴇʀs ɪɴ sᴜᴄʜ ᴀ ᴍᴜʟᴛɪᴅɪᴍᴇɴsɪᴏɴᴀʟ ᴀɴᴅ ᴛʜᴏᴜɢʜᴛғᴜʟ ᴡᴀʏ, ᴇɴᴀʙʟᴇs ʏᴏᴜ ᴛᴏ ᴄᴀʀᴇ ᴀʙᴏᴜᴛ ᴇᴠᴇɴ ᴛʜᴇ ᴍᴏsᴛ ᴍᴏʀᴀʟʟʏ ɢʀᴇʏ ᴏғ ᴛʜᴇ ʙᴜɴᴄʜ.

I’m telling you this is great, unputdownable, entertaining read while you’re lying on your couch, filling your mouth with greasy pop corn and enjoying each chapter. We are so thrilled to present to you the . . . ‘In My Dreams I Hold a Knife’ Exclusive Mortal Edition, brought to you in collaboration with @ ashleywinsteadbooks and @ bookmarked! The Phi Delta Fraternity of 2008 and the NFL of Frankie’s expectations are not supportive places for LGBTQIA+ members. What was your impression of his attempts to navigate those attitudes? What would you do in his position? Booklist “[An] edge-of-your-seat academic thriller...Taut and atmospheric, with scenes from Jessica's childhood and college years interposed with the dramatic events of the present day, In My Dreams I Hold a Knife will keep readers guessing until the very last moment. Perfect for fans of dark academia, the well-drawn characters will remind many of their own college days. In My Dreams I Hold a Knife is a twisty, literary thriller not to be missed.”

All seven characters had full stories but the focus was on Jessica. Not without faults, a reader would be tempted to view her as superficial as she’s so focused on her image. A quote from the first chapter appears to support this theory:

I already talked enough. Giving my five blazing stars! I truly more books of the author. She did amazing job!

Once the characters began working to solve the mystery, I enjoyed this book very much. Winstead’s pacing and storytelling are exceptionally good as she brings in many important social issues into the story, always in appropriate and respectful ways. My only struggle was with the first few chapters as we are getting to know the characters. Being about 20 years older than these characters, I found it very difficult to care about the things that they cared about and found it incredibly difficult to relate to them at first. Each of the East House Seven carries some form of guilt over Heather’s death. Compare the ways they manage that guilt. Besides the murderer, do you think any of them should be blamed? I’ve been so excited about this book for weeks now—next to For Your Own Good by Samantha Downing (another absolute must-read) it might have been my most anticipated thriller of the year. Did it live up to my expectations? Yes, yes, hell yes! When all your characters have secrets, how do you get to know them? Did you have their failures and alibis mapped out before you began writing, or did you figure out their roles as you went? sᴏ ᴍᴀɴʏ ʟɪᴛᴛʟᴇ ᴛᴡɪsᴛs ᴀɴᴅ ᴛᴜʀɴs ᴛʜʀᴏᴜɢʜᴏᴜᴛ ᴛʜᴇ ʙᴏᴏᴋ, ɪ sᴛᴀʏᴇᴅ ᴇɴɢᴀɢᴇᴅ ᴛʜᴇ ᴇɴᴛɪʀᴇ ᴛɪᴍᴇ. ɪ ᴀʙsᴏʟᴜᴛᴇʟʏ ʟᴏᴠᴇᴅ ᴛʜᴇ ᴡᴀʏ ᴄᴇʀᴛᴀɪɴ ᴇᴠᴇɴᴛs ᴀʀᴇ ғᴏʀᴇsʜᴀᴅᴏᴡᴇᴅ ɪɴ ᴛʜᴇ sᴜʙᴛʟᴇsᴛ ᴏғ ᴡᴀʏs, ʙᴜᴛ ᴇɴᴏᴜɢʜ ᴛᴏ ɢɪᴠᴇ ᴀ ᴘᴀʏᴏғғ ᴀs sᴏᴏɴ ᴀs ʏᴏᴜ ᴍᴀᴋᴇ ᴛʜᴇ ᴄᴏɴɴᴇᴄᴛɪᴏɴ.
