About this deal

Paul Gallico anthropomorphises them of course, but there's much in Peter and Jennie that you'll find in real cats. I’m afraid, despite of course knowing the story well, that I sobbed in all the places I had ever sobbed before – perhaps partly because of memories of the first sobbing, aged somewhere around 9 or 10, but also, because some quite deep themes are being explored – particularly loss, friendship, betrayal of trust, death. There is a local one, a complete tart, who has a home but would dearly like to move in here – and probably many other places – but the native residents would sulk massively. Peter and Jennie learn from each other and teach each other how to be more – soulful, whatever the shape of the body that encloses them. Paul Gallico captured the habits and mannerisms, and just the over-all essence of cats magnificently.

I'm glad I finally did get my hands on a copy of this, even though it's later in life than the author probably intended. Such a beautiful, simple, and poignant story, where all of the characters are such a joy to read about and sympathize with. I recently purchased a second-hand edition of 'Jennie' by Paul Gallico for a cat-loving friend of mine who had not come across the book before. Towards the end of the book, I thought that something heartbreaking would happen - either Peter or Jennie would die, or Peter would become a human being again and that would be the end of their friendship. They have several instances of narrow escapes from various dangers which might befall a cat, and, as in all good books, grow, develop and change through their relationship with each other and external events. Inevitably, he awakens on board from his 25-minute coma to find the terrible and beautiful memories of the past forty years were caused by a special mental probe of sorts from an extinct people.

If you are someone who loves cats, who has a pet cat, or planning to get one, this article Fascinating Facts About Cats is just for you. Sadly events work toward a climax which neither of them can avoid, and it really is a heartbreaking conclusion. I lent it to a Brit friend and he did have one negative comment: "Come, come, now, Mr Gallico -- since when has Glasgow been the capital of Scotland and Edinburgh 'Provincial'? Sounds strange to describe it that way, but it was a wonderful cat story and will be appreciated by anyone who loves cats! Every time I hear that piping theme, I cry for the world and the love he knew both for a lifetime and for only twenty-five minutes. One was slightly relieved not to find out what might have happened had Peter not died and reverted back to his human self. If you love books featuring cats or animal characters, or even if you love books featuring beautiful friendships, I will highly recommend 'Jennie'. On waking, he is astonished to find that he has turned into a cat… The world is a dangerous place for him, but luckily he is rescued and befriended by Jennie, a kindly stray tabby who has been abandoned by her owners.

I was sent scurrying to a re-read of this following a chance post by a fellow blogger about fictional books with a cat-focus. Not your average children's book - easy to understand, it is not primitive, and being so saturated with sincere emotion. I remember reading Black Beauty when I was young, and going to my mother to ask what a particularly disturbing image of beaten-horse-biology meant, to which she immediately teared up and quoted me word-for-word the passage, and we both cried the hour away.To my series of essays about the most influential books in my life, I must add a fifth, which recently came to my attention in a funny way. By the end of the book Peter has taken on his role as a cat completely, rarely thinking of his old life as a boy and ready to battle the same cat he met with in the beginning for ownership of Jennie. One day, when out with Nanny, Peter sees a kitten across the road and he steps out in front of a coal lorry without looking. Paul Gallico truly explores what it would be like to be a cat living in the wild, with no guaranteed source of food or shelter.
