About this deal

Overall I would definitely recommend this completely led duet. While I enjoyed this book overall, there are still aspects that I feel we could have ventured into that were left open This book has given me a huge audiobook hangover. I don’t know how another book can top the way Michael Gallager gives me full-body shivers when he says, “Good girl.” Overall, I can’t say I liked this book that much. There were some appealing components, such as the literary nods and the clear evidence of Leiber’s extensive knowledge of classic dark fiction and horror, as well having his bibliophilia show through in his characters. As a huge fan of MR James, it was great to see more than a couple of references to him. Similarly, fans of Lovecraft will appreciate the nods to his pivotal work in 20th Century horror and supernatural fiction. I guess my big issue was the fact that some concepts were just too out there for me (and their explanations somewhat tedious), the overall level of moral decadence (not a big draw for me), and the slow unfolding of the plot. Sure enough, the climax is a good payoff (really quite scary), but not enough to elevate this book to a higher level. Especially after how much I enjoyed its sister story, “Conjure Wife" out of Dark Ladies: Conjure Wife/Our Lady of Darkness. It's never a good idea to compare things, but sometimes the comparison is obligatory and that one thing fails to live up to its companion in the end. Such was the case with "Our Lady of Darkness." Whisked away to the Fire Court, Scarlett Monrhoe finds herself in the hands of the man who killed her mother. The Prince of Fire. Thrust amongst the Fae court she loathes, she is at their mercy. She doesn't know what plans he has for her, but she has plans of her own. She just hasn't decided how thoroughly she wants to break him yet. If only he didn't tempt her with every breath, every touch, every kiss. It's another dangerous game that has her wondering if she will be the one irreparably broken in the end.

And i am suddenly so bored of this book and review and im done with it. Thank you for reading if everyone ever reads this chaotic “review” of mine. The first half of this book was not good (like, I almost DNF'd). I started this book in April and just finished it now in June. However, the last half of this book was really, really good. And now...damn it all to hell...I think I have to keep reading this series. And yes, this book does have similarities with ToG/ACOTAR, but to me, they're not as annoying as other books I've read. Maybe because the plot isn't clear yet and all the similarities lie with character attributes and tropes, and it's just a few. guys’ povs 14 years ago confused me. how old were they in the present? 32? i thought the guys were younger like in their mid-twenties. This is easily one of my top reads for the year. I hope the rest of the books can live up to the expectations set forward by the first. There’s so much wrong with her character I could write examples for dayss. I just wish she was smarter, stronger and didn’t rely so heavily on the men around her. Im sorry, the story just didnt do it for me. It was a nice premise and interesting idea but it just wasn’t executed well because…well…it wasn’t executed that much?

I liked Sorin and how level headed he was, I loved Nuri, she seemed like a baddie I wish we got more of her. Cassius was cool and Callan was sweet even though I felt bad for him. Character wise it was solid apart from 1… If I were to answer this question with a simple yes or no, I would say no. BUT, from the dialogue and the drizzle of spice (at least in one scene) I have a hunch that the books will get more spicy as things progress. I'm just hoping that everything will become more clear in the next books or, at the very least, that last one.Ok so im roughly halfway through and what I really dislike about her is how impulsive she is. She has slapped Sorin countless times just because he won't tell her the name of a lady she thinks is suppperrrr important. And sure it is. But that doesn't warrant you slapping someone and stomping your foot in anger or shouting at them every time they refuse to answer. Like, why can't she do something more witty or clever or unexpected that somehow jolts the answer out of him? Obviously her way of interrogation is not working, so she should change it up a bit. I would regard her as more smart if she did so. But she just seems like a robot programmed to do the exact same thing each time, which is frustrating. This duet was, simply put, excellent! I really hope we see another epilogue (LOL) with them. Or, better yet, cameos from them in a new series about the next generation. 😁 I loved this even more the second time! This world and these characters are some of my favorites of all time.

I would still consider this semi-required reading for the 19th-20th Century classic horror scholar or devotee. You might like it more than I did, and that would be an a good thing in the end if you find another book you love. Awhile ago, I came across a list of Gaiman's favorite books and this was on it. What the hey, I said. I'll take a stab at that! Well, stab taken, and it's a good thing that I wasn't planing on sleeping any time soon. Wow, wow, wow - it's been awhile since a book creeped me out this badly! This city by the river and the fact that the Artist District was mentioned so many times??? What in the Velaris??? Creampie and breeding fetish is all over the books (mainly the 2nd), not complaining but I think it severely overshadowed other things. Like, there was more focus on semen being too much or staying inside than the sensation of DP or having four d1kcs in the female MC simultaneously. Call me crazy but in a smut book I care more about the description of sensations, idk I may be weird, share your opinions in the comments! Sure, there is a crown prince and they exhange/talking about books together! 📚 Ahhhh my fave Dorian/Celaena romance here. BUT She use him! Fool the prince to love her so she can get the information from him. Ahhhh my fave is ruined here. *reduce my fun, thanks*Fourthly, I think something needs to change with the "Dark vs Light" dichotomy that is so prevalent in YA novels. Like people are finer shades of gray too...you know...example excerpt below: This is going to be a review for both books of the series actually, so brace yourselves, it's gonna be long. Strangely enough, I was very engaged with certain parts of this novel, how it set itself up as a horror within a horror, a horror writer going through a dark patch that then leads him into a very STRANGE patch where ideas intersect with an almost Lovecraftian (or Clark Ashton Smith-ian) becomes a novel of investigation and eldritch (idea) horror. It is a rare day when I DNF a book. I really, really wanted to like this series and I tried TWO times to finish the second book but I just couldn’t get into the writing style. The first book was better but still annoying. I had high hopes the story and characters would improve in the series but those came crashing down. Then her being so dramatic about Sorin keeping things from her when she to kept a lot hidden from him majority of the book.

She is literally the most insufferable main character from the start of the first book. I was just hoping for Finally, having praised the Gateway ebook editions of classic Fantasy and Sci-Fi previously I feel I must offer an addendum here. Having now read several of them, I have noticed a tendency for occasional typos. This is by far the worst offender that I have come across so far though. I can only assume that the original books were scanned with text recognition software and that nothing has been done to tidy them up since. 'l's sometime appear as 'i's, other characters are more bewildering still but a consistent and infuriating mistake sees 'th' become 'm'. A 'breath' is not the same thing as a 'bream'. 'Men' is rather different from 'then'. This probably happens at least once a paragraph. Another pretty cage. Scarlett, who has been whisked away to the Fire Court, finds she is in the hands of the guy that murdered her mom. The Prince of Fire. Thrust among the Fae court she loathes, she’s at their mercy. She does not know what plans he has for her, however she’s got some plans of her own. She only needs to decide just how thoroughly she wants to break the guy yet. If only he did not tempt her with every touch, every breath, and every kiss. It is another dangerous game that gets her wondering if she is going to be the one broken irreparably by the end. Richard A. Lupoff praised Our Lady of Darkness as "one of the scariest, most original, and most damnably convincing fantasy notions I've ever come across." [7] See also [ edit ] Fritz Reuter Leiber Jr. was one of the more interesting of the young writers who came into HP Lovecraft's orbit, and some of his best early short fiction is horror rather than sf or fantasy. He found his mature voice early in the first of the sword-and-sorcery adventures featuring the large sensitive barbarian Fafhrd and the small street-smart-ish Gray Mouser; he returned to this series at various points in his career, using it sometimes for farce and sometimes for gloomy mood pieces--The Swords of Lankhmar is perhaps the best single volume of their adventures. Leiber's science fiction includes the planet-smashing The Wanderer in which a large cast mostly survive flood, fire, and the sexual attentions of feline aliens, and the satirical A Spectre is Haunting Texas in which a gangling, exo-skeleton-clad actor from the Moon leads a revolution and finds his true love. Leiber's late short fiction, and the fine horror novel Our Lady of Darkness, combine autobiographical issues like his struggle with depression and alcoholism with meditations on the emotional content of the fantastic genres. Leiber's capacity for endless self-reinvention and productive self-examination kept him, until his death, one of the most modern of his sf generation. My changing feelings the entire time I read this book : I love it. I hate it. It's great. It's atrocious. The pace is fantastic. It's so slow, nothing is happening. Scarlett is a queen. Scarlett is the most annoying FMC. I never want this to end. Thank God it's over. I need the next one immediately. I don't want to continue this torture. I’ve read the complete Lady of Darkness series so my review for this first book is really also a review of the whole series. There is really only one word to describe this book and the series - Perfection. I loved everything about this series from the unique characters and intriguing world to the expertly crafted plot. Every plot detail in each book has significance to the storyline in the later books so you will need to pay attention. I highly recommend this series. You will not be able to put any of the books down.
