About this deal

This book is about teaching children and their parents about mindfulness and meditation. The book provides exercises and activities that help the reader become more mindful and aware of the present moment.

Mindfulness—the quality of attention that combines full awareness with acceptance of each moment, just as it is—is gaining broad acceptance among mental health professionals as an adjunct to treatment. This little book is a very appealing introduction to mindfulness meditation for children and their parents. In a simple and accessible way, it describes what mindfulness is and how mindfulness-based practices can help children calm down, become more focused, fall asleep more easily, alleviate worry, manage anger, and generally become more patient and aware. The book contains eleven practices that focus on just these scenarios, along with short examples and anecdotes throughout. Ein in sehr jungen Jahren auf Achtsamkeit geschulter Geist kann ungeahnte Sphären der Erleuchtung erlangen Sitting Still Like a Frogteaches children mindfulness through an amphibious friend who sits very still. . . . Many practices fill the book and audio CD, and all of them remind us, and our children, just how easily thoughts can move us off our lily pads.”— Mindfulmagazine Simple mindfulness practices to help your child (ages 5-12) deal with anxiety, improve concentration, and handle difficult emotions.

Sitting Still Like a Frogintroduces the basics of mindfulness to children in an easy-to-understand and playful way. It guides children in the cultivation of presence: presence of mind, presence of heart, and presence in the body. This is something we are all capable of but usually don’t cultivate intentionally. Why not start young in training those capacities? The world nowadays is so complex and fast-paced that knowing how to ground oneself in the present moment is an absolute necessity to make sense of the world and to continue learning, growing, and contributing what is uniquely yours to contribute in this world.”—from the foreword by Jon Kabat-Zinn An informative Foreword by Jon Kabat-Zinn introduces this valuable guide on mindfulness and meditation for children. Eline Snel is a seasoned parent, therapist and teacher. Her book is filled with practical suggestions and examples of how mindfulness can help to cultivate attentiveness (internal and external), relieve stress, recognize moods, relax, and deal with what is happening within and around us. The CD provides eleven guided meditations. For parents, teachers and anyone ages 5 to 12 (and up).” Goodnight Mind: Turn Off Your Noisy Thoughts and Get a Good Night’s Sleep by Colleen E. Carney and Rachel Manber

To be fair, I was already familiar with all the concepts and exercises in Sitting Still Like a Frog: Mindfulness Exercises for Kids. This book is aimed more at kids and other people just getting introduced to mindfulness. As such, it's not "weighty" enough to offer anything new for anyone already versed in mindfulness. But, again, that's not its intent. It provides a broad overview to a wide array of mindfulness concepts without delving too deeply and becoming too esoteric for its audience. On top of that, one of my boys has been diagnosed with ADHD, though I wouldn't be surprised if at least one more ended up with the same diagnosis down the road. All three have had trouble falling asleep at one time or another during their lives, sometimes for an extended period of months, with the resulting sleep deprivation affecting their personality, school work, and exacerbating the aforementioned ADHD symptoms. Anxiety also runs in the family and I've seen it take its toll on my kids already - "Mom, my head is never quiet!" one of them told me - so I'm constantly looking for ways to help them draw strength from within themselves, calm their over-active brains, and deal with the world around them. Now you are going to hear all kinds of sounds. Can you try to listen to them as though you were hearing them for the first time, without “judging” them and without necessarily trying to recognize them? In conclusion, “Sitting Still Like a Frog” is a great book for families who want to learn about mindfulness and meditation. It provides easy-to-understand exercises and activities that help readers become more mindful and aware of the present moment. Details of Sitting Still Like a Frog Book Book Can look at children without judging or labelling them, or saying things like: “She’s the musical one in the family, and he’s a creature of habit”
