This erosion control blanket roll is compliant with most storm water management regulations and comes with 20 staples to help anchor it to the soil. Along with that, the blanket roll provides “super water retention,” which makes watering more efficient. The fibers in the blanket roll are designed to cling to the soil to help keep both it and the seeds in place.

Fescue is another grass that does well with foot traffic. There are several types of fescue often used in grass mixes, including tall fescue and fine fescue. Generally, this is a drought-resistant and hardy type of grass. You should be able to mow over your grass mat, provided the grass has reached a mowable height of at least two to three inches.

Mowing your lawn regularly doesn’t just keep it looking good; it also helps improve the health of the grass, as overly long blades of grass shade their own roots and prevent nutrients and water from effectively reaching them. It’s important to mow your lawn to the appropriate height for that type of grass, as going too short is also detrimental to the lawn’s health. Overly short grass doesn’t have enough foliage to create nutrients through photosynthesis or choke out weeds.

Once you know more about the base of your lawn—the soil—you can decide if hydroseeding, grass seeding, or sodding is right for your lawn. We’ve put together an easy chart that helps break down the advantages and disadvantages of the different seeding methods. Seeding method Seed may be lost to wind, birds, or water Slowest growth time Must stay off grass for several months Even and uniform grass – since the slurry you spray contains seeds, water, mulch, and one or more additives, hydroseeding delivers lush, even grass, and not patches of grass. Perennial Ryegrass, 40% Fine Fescue – contains a higher amount of fescue for shade tolerance, and performs better with little maintenance compared to other lawn mixes. On the downside, this mixture may not be as weather tolerant as those with higher amounts of perennial ryegrass. Apart from soil preparation being on point, a hydroseeding application must be done at the right time, and with the right equipment. After spending 40+ hours of in-depth research, we found a list of the 5 best options to ease your selection. To ensure the best results, it’s important to choose grass seed that thrives in the climate you live in. Along with that, you need to bear in mind how much sun exposure your lawn is subjected to as well as how often the grass seed will need watered. It’s also helpful to keep in mind how much foot traffic your yard will see. Be careful when you’re buying online, as it’s not always clear whether the lawn blanket comes with seeds or not. This grass seed from Scotts is treated with a water-absorbing coating to help seed germinate better, as well as protect against disease and provide nutrients. You can use it to start a new lawn or overseed an existing lawn. Either way, you'll need to prepare by loosening the soil, removing dead grass or other debris, and gently raking in the seed, followed by regular watering for at least the first three weeks. Expect to see the grass start sprouting in just five to 12 days. Bermudagrass spreads rapidly, so you won't have to wait long to have a lush, green lawn. Be sure to plant your Bermudagrass in a full-sun location where the soil drains well, though, or else it won't thrive. Ideally, it should be planted in late spring through early summer when temperatures are between 70 and 90 degrees. A 1-pound bag covers up to 1,000 square feet when overseeding an existing lawn, or up to 300 square feet when starting a new lawn.

Imagine trying to grow a grass lawn in front of your home only to find the grass has grown in unsightly clumps. This is a common problem that arises when freely planting scattered grass seed. But is there another way to do this without risking clumpy grass? You can use this to start a new lawn or to overseed a patchy existing lawn, but either way, proper preparation is crucial to get the best results. That means raking the soil to loosen it and removing any dead grass or other debris, applying the seed evenly (ideally with a spreader, not by merely tossing out handfuls of seed), gently raking the seed into the soil, and watering daily to keep the soil moist—not soggy—until the seedlings are at least 2 inches high. Ideally, you should plant this seed in either the spring or the fall, when temperatures are between 60 and 80 degrees F. When seeds clump together and germinate, they will strangle each other. This then leads to clumpy lawns and bare spots. Using a seed germination mat instead helps keep the seeds evenly distributed throughout your lawn. How Long Does it Take For a Grass Seed Mat to Decompose? Compost can either be added to the soil before planting your seeds or mixed with the grass seeds when planting them. However, if you are covering the seeds after you plant them, spread approximately ¼ inch of compost over your grass seed. A thin layer is enough to provide adequate protection and covering without inhibiting germination. Mulch Annual ryegrass needs at least six hours of full sun each day for growth, but will tolerate partial shade. During its brief lifespan, it's quite tolerant of drought and disease, and it withstands foot traffic very well. If you are using it to overseed a warm-season lawn, it's best to plant the ryegrass in the fall. In northern climates, it can also be planted in the spring. But once temperatures start to rise into the 80s, expect to see the ryegrass begin to yellow and die off. It will also die if temperatures fall below freezing for more than a few days.
