About this deal

Lady Macbeth is one of Shakespeare’s most famous and frightening female characters. When we first see her, she is already plotting Duncan’s murder, and she is stronger, more ruthless, and more ambitious than her husband. She seems fully aware of this and knows that she will have to push Macbeth into committing murder. At one point, she wishes that she were not a woman so that she could do it herself. This character does not match that. Perhaps she could never match that. And yes I know that this is based on Grouch, the Scottish queen that inspired Shakespeare rather than Lady Macbeth herself, but the comparison is inevitable, especially as this finishes where Shakespeare begins. Even bearing that in mind, Grouch was so much less than I hoped. Petty, selfish in a way that made her stupid, simply drawn, and self-pitying. She doesn't plan well, she reacts, and without the help of others, she tends to fail. There's nothing to admire in her. So much so that I liked Macbethad more than her at the end. That simply cannot be borne.

William Oldroyd’s fierce feature debut feels like Victorian noir, a twist on a genre probably invented by Shakespeare in the first place. It could well open up a dark new avenue in the bonnets-and-bows world of classic literary adaptation. His movie does an awful lot with a limited budget. It is smart, sexy, dour: qualities that are weaponised by a lethally charismatic lead performance from Florence Pugh as the eponymous, unrepentant killer. She is both sphinx and minx. “You have no idea of the damage you can cause,” her enraged father-in-law splutters at her. Actually, he’s the one with no idea. Gruoch was not my favourite character. She is based on the blueprint Lady Macbeth laid down - she is scheming, paranoid and violent - though the reasons she developed into this character were interesting to discover along the way. My favourite character ended up being Macbethad, who was one of the more balanced characters. The fact that he stood out in the book that was about her, and she stood out in the play about him, is an irony that is not lost on me.

Macbeth - is a great friend to begin with. They have fought bravely beside each other in battle. Macbeth doesn’t want to kill Banquo, but the Witches have said that Banquo’s children will be kings. This threatens Macbeth’s position as king. He sees Banquo’s murder as the only way to cheat fate. Ross is a Scottish nobleman and Lady Macduff’s cousin. He brings Macbeth the news that Duncan has made him Thane of Cawdor. He tries to comfort Lady Macduff when her husband leaves for England. He has to tell Macduff the sad news that his family has been murdered. He joins Malcolm and the English army in toppling Macbeth towards the end. The Witches rhyme their way through the play causing mayhem wherever they can. They make promises to Macbeth that come with a heavy price. They use words cleverly to mislead Macbeth. They’re not pretty. Banquo mentions that they have beards.

She welcomes King Duncan warmly even though she is planning his murder. She also advises Macbeth to be two-faced. Emotional – when Malcolm tests his loyalty, he becomes very upset. He is devastated by the death of his family. He kills Macbeth in a rage of revenge. Dublin Film Critics' Circle Awards". 26 February 2017. Archived from the original on 27 May 2017 . [15] [16] He tests Macduff’s loyalty to him because he’s worried that Macduff is a spy. When Macduff finds out that his family has been killed, he says: And if Boedhe did decide to become a Christian, Gruoch would’ve been taught about Christianity, she would not be learning about it from local children. She’s still the granddaughter of a king and would be raised as such, especially since at this time Scots could stake a claim to the throne through their maternal line.

Guy Lodge of Variety said "Florence Pugh announces herself as a major talent to watch in William Oldroyd's impressively tough-minded Victorian tragedy."
