About this deal

Its success resulted in a franchise that followed, including: a prequel miniseries, Blood Trails in 2007, a sequel miniseries, Dust to Dust in 2008, and a straight-to-home video sequel film Dark Days in 2010. Regulars of the blog will know that I’m quite the Nordic Noir fan, and while Thirty Days of Darkness is certainly that, there is something about this book that makes it stand out in the genre. Maybe it’s the fact that the POV is an author’s, a not entirely likeable one at that, which gives the story a bit of self-reflective feel. Or it could be the humour. I can’t really put my finger on it but whatever it is, it works, and it makes for a very accomplished debut! Dreadful. When I read this kind of bad book, trying to be charitable,I sometimes wonder if they're not intended as a (badly done) parody, but no, it's just plain awful. I really enjoyed this book. There's a kind of 'Murder She Wrote' vibe to it all, with the author turned amateur detective angle, albeit that Hannah, whilst quite observant, is far more inept than Jessica Fletcher. She's just as big a magnet for trouble though and when trouble finds her, it likes to play a merry game. Fun for us as readers, a bit less fun for our protagonist. This is a classic murder mystery case, perhaps slightly too atmospheric and dark to be cost crime, but blending the suspense and intrigue with a good dose of humour, often at Hannah's expense.

When she expresses her contempt for genre fiction, Hanna is publicly challenged to write a crime novel in thirty days. Scared that she will lose face, she accepts, and her editor sends her to HÚsafjÖður – a quiet, tight-knit village in Iceland, filled with colorful local characters – for inspiration. Atmospheric, dramatic and full of nerve-jangling twists and turns, Thirty Days of Darkness is a darkly funny, unsettling debut Nordic Noir thriller that marks the start of a breath-taking new series. There's no camp to be found here, not always a good thing, but in 30 Days of Night, it is. I honestly cannot recommend this one enough, despite its intense gore and general panning, I implore you to at the very least give it a go, and decide for yourself.

The first thing I loved about this book was that stunning cover. I hadn’t fully taken it in when I received the book, but once I’d found my reading glasses I couldn’t stop looking at it. That tiny lit up window, a little orange glow of creativity in the darkness really fired up my imagination. I’d love Orenda to create some book posters to accompany their author’s work. The blurb drew me in with it’s conflict between genre authors and their supposedly high brow literary fiction colleagues. Hannah writes literary fiction and is dismayed at a book festival to see the crowds attending a Q and A with Jørn Jenson, the darling of Scandi Noir, who churns out a formulaic book every year. Yet he’s filling a tent with fans and she’s in a lonely booth waiting for someone to drop by. I loved that she launched a book at his head! In the ensuing row, Jensen goads Hannah into saying she could write a crime novel in a month. Her agent uses the incident as a great marketing strategy and pours fuel on the fire, talking to the press about the wager and even putting Hannah on a plane to Iceland as a writing retreat. There she will live with a lady called Ella and hopefully, within thirty days, complete a commercial success. Yet within days of Hannah’s arrival there’s a real life crime, as Ella’s nephew Thor is found drowned in the waters of the harbour. Can Hannah use the case to write her crime masterpiece? As she starts to ask questions about this small town community will she find inspiration, or will she be in more danger than she ever imagined? Jenny Lund Madsen is one of Denmark’s most acclaimed scriptwriters (including the international hits Rita and Follow the Money) and is known as an advocate for better representation for sexual and ethnic minorities in Danish TV and film. She recently made her debut as a playwright with the critically acclaimed Audition ( Aarhus Teater) and her debut literary thriller, Thirty Days of Darkness, first in an addictive new series, won the Harald Mogensen Prize for Best Danish Crime Novel of the year and was shortlisted for the coveted Glass Key Award. She lives in Denmark with her young family. This reminded me somewhat of the more recent, meta efforts of the great Anthony Horowitz’ The Bookbag Such a clever, original twist on the Nordic Noir tradition – darkly humorous and utterly captivating’ Eva Björg Ægisdóttir Hilariously scathing. Satirises genre fiction while creating a first-class example of it, full of suspects, red herrings and twists … wit and originality make it a joy to read’ Mark Sanderson, The Times CRIME BOOK OF THE MONTHDays of Night' sequel finds its vampire hunters". Heatvision.hollywoodreporter.com . Retrieved 2010-12-26. "NYCC, DAY 2: MYSPACE MYSTERY PANELISTS REVEALED!". Comic Book Resources . Retrieved April 6, 2007. Whilst Hannah's initial snobbery about commercial fiction, and her temporary home in Iceland, is a little off putting, and she is not always the most likeable of characters, there is something about her that is compelling, and the banter between her and Jørn really does make for some great scenes. She is believable (and we've probably all seen similar literature snobs on social media) and Jenny Lund Madsen has done a brilliant job of creating a character who can infuriate and amuse within a few short lines. In spite of everything, there is a heart lurking (somewhere) under her cool exterior and, the occasional (frequent) misjudgement aside, she's actually the kind of person I enjoyed spending time with, and her enthusiasm for the mystery really came through in the narrative, drawing me deeper into the story. In fact, characters as a whole are brought to life brilliantly, painting a picture of the community and the various personalities that inhabit it, be they

A straight-to-DVD sequel entitled Dark Days was released on October 5, 2010. [30] The script for the sequel was written by Steve Niles and Ben Ketai with Ketai also positioned as director. It’s obvious that the lone policeman, Viktor, isn’t up to the task and Hannah’s actions may put her life in danger.
