About this deal

The instructions for your weed killer may state a maximum of one application a year. Presumably this is to safe guard the grass and NOT the weeds! The logic, therefore, is that the side effects of the lawn weed killer above a certain level may damage or even kill the grass. The Lawnsmith recommended weed killers, Weedol (Verdone) and Resolva , state only one treatment per year. However, we have selected them because of their different active ingredients which means you can now treat twice a year if you need to as long as you use each product just once. This only applies when spraying the whole lawn with diluted weed killer concentrate NOT ‘ready to use’ weed killers for spot treating weeds which if targeted on the weed can be used more often. Selective Lawn Weed Killer Benefits: The Deadfast Concentrated Weed Killer Sachets is for those who don’t want to worry about mixing the right amount of product. It comes with 12 sachets and is able to cover up to 720 sqm. You can simply dispense a sachet of product into a watering can, add water and then apply to the weeds you are wanting to treat. By following these safety precautions when using the best weed killer concentrate, you can ensure that you don’t put yourself or your garden at risk. Ready to learn more about finding the best weed killer concentrate and using it correctly to get the best results? Keep reading to find out! Systemic Weed Killers: Systemic weed killers are perhaps the most popular type of concentrate due to their ability to target a wide variety of weeds. Systemic weed killers are designed to be absorbed by the leaves and stems of the targeted plants, killing them from within. Whilst not all products can successfully get rid of pervasive weeds like horsetail, this WeedFree Plus weed killer causes it to turn brown in a couple of days. Other, more common weeds, can show signs of wilting within a couple of hours.

Selective weed killers come in both liquid and granular versions, so which is best? Liquid Weedkillers Method 6: Plants needing two or three applications of weedkillers containing 2,4-D plus mecoprop-P;2,4-D plus dicamba; or fluroxypyr. Examples include Weedol Lawn Weedkiller, Westland Aftercut All-in-One Feed, Weed and Moss killer or Vitax All in One Feed, Weed and Mosskiller (these also containfertiliser and mosskiller). This type of weedkiller stimulates the hormones in the weeds, causing the cells to grow fast. At first, it appeared that the weeds are getting bigger and taller, but after a few days of this accelerated growth, the cells could no longer sustain themselves, the cell walls then started to collapse, and the weeds started to wilt and die off. Once the weedkiller is in the water you just need to shake it up and they apply it over 10 square metres of lawn.Pelargonic acid is the most commonly found active ingredient in organic weed killers. It’s a naturally occurring acid in geraniums. This acid is generally considered effective at controlling the growth of smaller broadleaf weeds (under 15 cm tall). The weed killer is straight forward to apply, and there’s a built-in pump pressure sprayer which helps spread the liquid. When sufficiently pumped, the pressure sprayer bottle projects the weed killer to around 120 cm, keeping the product away from your hands. Its real strength, though, is that it can control weeds that other weed killers tend to struggle with, including horsetail/mare’s tail and ground elder, as it did on an overgrown bank and a disused veg bed where other weed killers had failed miserably. It’s a good bet if you need a powerful weed killer but you don’t want to spray something really nasty on your plot. Yes, an amateur weedkiller concentrate might not be as strong as a professional product and that is for reasons of safety. That said, all it means is that you need more concentrate to dilute into water than you would a professional product.

One downside of this weed killer is that it makes the soil unusable for a period of time. This is fairly disappointing if you’re wanting to get planting. The instructions state that it takes a ‘growing season’ to wear off, meaning potentially an entire spring or summer! So now you know you need a selective weedkiller to kill weeds without damaging your lawn. But how do you know a particular weed killer is safe to use on your lawn? The Weedol Ultra Tough WeedKiller Liquid Concentrate is arguably the easiest weed killer to apply of all the ones I tested. It doesn’t come pre-mixed, but it can be diluted in either a watering can or sprayer. Organic gardeners may prefer natural weed killers that vinegar, citric acid, clove oil, and other organic garden-friendly ingredients instead of harsh, noxious chemicals. You also need to be aware that as this product also controls moss, it contains iron which can stain pathways so be careful when applying. However, don’t expect them to die within 24 hours as other weedkillers claim. It can take a week or so to see results. However, this is due to the fact that it doesn’t contain Glyphosate. Method 2: Plants usually easily killed using one or two applications of weedkillers containing 2,4-D plus mecoprop-P or 2,4-D plus dicamba. Examples include Doff Complete Lawn Feed, Weed & Mosskiller,Vitax All in One Lawn Feed, Weed & Mosskiller or Westland Aftercut All-in-One Feed, Weed & Mosskiller (also contains fertiliser and mosskiller).

The actual chemicals vary depending on the type and brand of weed killer, but they tend to work in a combination of the following ways: Glyphosate – kills the majority of plants, including perennial grasses, so it’s not one that you want to accidentally get on the lawn or flowerbed. It is effective at killing well-established weeds because it works from inside the weed itself. After being absorbed by the leaves and stalk of the weed, glyphosate spreads to the rest of the plant, including the roots. In recent years, it’s developed a reputation for being dangerous; however the jury is out on a definitive conclusion. Some studies have found it to be carcinogenic, whilst others consider it safe for humans to use as long as the instructions are followed. Glyphosate is also thought to negatively affect wildlife such as bees and aquatic life. It can stay in the soil for a long time as well.Value for Money: When assessing value for money, I identified how many litres of weed killer you received, the treatment area it covers, and the price point. Products that covered a higher surface area and still retained their effectiveness (for example, a 2 L bottle able to cover over 3000 sqm) were rated higher than those that only covered a smaller surface area for the same – or similar – price. I also assessed the additional features that come with a weed killer, as these products give you better value for money. Alternatively, look in our Weedkillers for gardeners document– sections 1b, cand d–for the corresponding product trade names (such as dicamba/mecoprop-P is sold as ‘Resolva Lawn Weedkiller Extra’) They typically come as part of a ready to use lawn feed and weed type of product but rarely as a stand-alone weedkiller.
