About this deal

What is truly special in the books are the characters, whose age allows for a beautiful kind of interaction… For all the fizz of jokes and romance, the books carry with them a sense of grief and sadness which becomes much stronger in The Last Devil to Die…The kindness is his books comes out of something greater for Osman. The story continues with Donna and Bogdan, Chris and Patrice, Connie in prison running her cocaine business as usual but involves some newcomers: the unsympathetic Melvyn who refuses to believe he’s caught up in a romance fraud; Computer Bob, an insular but tech savvy guy, and a promising newcomer to Cooper’s Chase. When Richard was only nine years old, his dad walked out on the family, which created difficulty for the rest of his life. The residents of Coopers Chase have seen a lot, but the impact has rarely been felt so close to home.

He remembers that when he was fifteen, staying up until after midnight to watch the 1985 snooker world final. My only sadness is that, like Agatha Christie, Richard Osmon has chosen his protagonists as retired. He began his career working as executive producer on many British game shows, including 8 out of 10 Cats (Channel 4 comedy panel), Deal or No Deal, and 10 O’Clock Live (a satirical comedy).

Bourton said: “Since the launch of his debut in 2020, Richard Osman has been entertaining millions of readers around the world who have taken his characters into their hearts.

This is because at sixteen, he spent all his time with some paper and a pen, mainly just writing down jokes. With the body count rising, the clock ticking down, and trouble firmly on their tail, has their luck finally run out? Each of his novels, The Thursday Murder Club, The Man Who Died Twice, and The Bullet That Missed were number one, million-copy international bestsellers as well as New York Times bestsellers…. Mushens also commented: “Working with Richard has been a joy from day one, and I love watching him grow as an author from book to book – funny, warm, but also with a scalpel-sharp eye for a compelling mystery.

The joy of writing this, is dark things happen in these books, but you can always talk about daytime TV and cakes.

Authors Harper Lee and Dan Brown have sold more books, but aren’t British, and E L James was never published in hardback. The Last Devil to Die is equal parts well-plotted mystery, scintillating repartee and deep reflection on what it means to love and live. He was born with nystagmus, an eye condition that significantly reduces his vision, he memorizes entire scripts since this condition makes it tough to read an autocue.

That’s a high bar to set from the get-go, but Osman has easily achieved it in subsequent books… This book is as delightful as the others. This is the 30th book, but considering Alex has survived "Kill Alex Cross" before, chances are he survives this one. I’m sad I have to wait before I can read along with Joyce again, or swoon over Bogdan’s capabilities.

The Bullet That Missed: (The Thursday Murder Club 3)

This book managed to do something that only 1 or 2 others have ever managed before in my lifetime of reading (50+ yrs) - it made me cry - and more than once. There may be other aged detectives in print and on television, but for wit, intelligence and humanity, the Thursday Murder Club outranks them all.The characters are delightful and the switch between third person narration and Joyce’s diary continues to work beautifully. If Richard told the sixteen year old version of himself that he would end up writing a book, he would say, yes of course, it makes total sense. An old friend in the antiques business has been killed, and a dangerous package he was protecting has gone missing. Around the world, Osman’s existing publishers have also swooped in to snap up the rights to the new books.
