Made to reflect the changing drinking culture - with many people now choosing no or low alcohol brands - the spirithas been created to offer a premium and satisfying alternative to an alcoholic drink. Pioneering alcohol-free distillation, unlike most alcohol-free drinks we don’t use alcohol in the process. Our distillery made spirit is 0.0% as we believe this to be important if we want to achieve authenticity, transparency and premium. We regularly assess microbial, chemical and mineral content of water used and manage water sources appropriately. Through various brand activations we have raised money for charitable and local causes over 2% of our revenue - Protect Our Winters, McMillan Sober October and Seawilding. Meaning wild earth, the new alcohol-free spirit, which has an amber hue, is distilled, blended and bottled in the Scottish Lowlands.
Feragaia (fer-a-guy-a) has a complex but clean taste and warming finish, which is best enjoyed over ice or with a light tonic. Feragaia never touches alcohol meaning it retains all the natural flavours and qualities of its ingredients. We have just opened Scotland’s first alcohol-free distillery, which sets the scene for innovation, but no teasers yet, I’m afraid. For my sculptures, I continue to explore more abstract expression, and I’m setting my sights on an exhibition in 2024! Using our platform for good education and inspiring Feragaia drinkers to reconnect to nature behind them for their own health and to learn to respect our planet and its resources more. We set our KPIs for environmental and social outcomes on an annual basis which are discussed in all board meetings.I, on the other hand, was fixed on ‘where is the confidence in alcohol-free’ and felt strongly that it was because almost all alcohol-free drinks rely on what they are not – alcohol! Typically, they contain or mimic alcohol, which is why Feragaia is a ‘Free Spirit’ distilled to be different in Scotland and is not trying to be anything but itself. Luxurious Magazine: The non-alcoholic drinks market is expanding rapidly. What was it about this that made you want to launch Feragaia? I got to the point in 2018 that I was prepared to do something about it – that’s when I spoke to Bill and Feragaia; the Original Free Spirit was born. Its name means ‘wild earth’, with Fera in Latin meaning ‘wild’ and ‘Gaia’ in Greek mythology translating to ‘earth’.
The company recently completed construction of what it claims is the first working alcohol-free distillery in Scotland. Combining traditional distillation techniques, the process brings together 14 responsibly sourced botanicals from both land and sea including flower, leaves and roots. Time optimises the extraction of natural flavours, which are then hand blended, cut with Scottish water and rested to achieve Feragaia’s characterful depth of flavour. At 0.0% ABV – Feragaia does not compromise and use alcohol in its process. Pioneers of a new era of alcohol-free Scottish distillation – It is a true alcohol-free spirit. Feragaia has zero sugar, and is vegan and gluten-free. Furthermore, the bottle’s format has increased from 500ml to 750ml. It is also made from 100% recycled glass, reflecting the company’s B Corp accreditation. We minimise the use of high emission vehicles in favour of cleaner, environmental and delivery. Our impact is low currently, but as we grow, clean logistics will be a key area for us live up to our commitment. Our bottles are sitting prominently in a five-star display, rubbing shoulders with other leading drinks brands. Most alcohol-free spirits rely on alcohol to carry flavour in the process, this is then stripped out along with natural flavours of the botanicals.
These delicate flavours of flowers and leaves combine with the earthier notes of root botanicals and spices to create a complex and layered drink.
Tasting notes
We have eliminated all harmful chemicals from our manufacturing process. Our manufacturing process is low impact, chemical free and our botanicals are composted afterwards. JW: There are always big ambitious targets bumping around in my mind, ones that I know are unlikely to come off in the way I envisage them. However, they normally end up somewhere, and that’s progress for me. Amber in colour, with a taste of clean complexity and warming finish, this is an open call to cut out the noise and take in the moments worth savouring.
Bold by nature, Feragaia is an alcohol-free spirit made from land and sea botanicals. True to its name, meaning ‘Wild Earth’, it is a product of windswept coastlines, open country and creative minds. In 2021 we want to become more established in the domestic market, adding more premium retailers like Harrods.Jamie Wild: I grew up with what I would call a typical British relationship with drinking. I think it is nicely illustrated by a conversation I recall being an observer in, which went something like, “If you can, invest in big alcoholic drinks businesses, do- people will drink alcohol whether they are happy, sad or just feeling normal”. The product contains 14 botanicals including seaweed, bay leaf and chamomile, and is hand-blended and cut with Scottish water.
