About this deal

A 50-250 f/2.8 will easily be 2x the weight/bulk, 2-4x the price, and sell 10-20x less units compared to a 70-200. The Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 DG DN OS Sports lens will include 20 elements across 15 groups, including six FLD, two SLD, and three aspherical lens elements. Life is all about compromises. With a bright, continuous aperture and minimal size and weight being the key elements of its design, it's not surprising at all that the Sigma 28-70mm F2.8 DG DN's image quality can't quite compete with larger, more expensive alternatives like Sigma's own 24-70mm F2.8 DG DN Art.

I generally shoot the way I normally shoot with all the gear I review. From what I was able to get from the fp L, I didn’t have any issues. I don’t do much sports though but for everything else I’ve shot, the camera worked great. It’s an electronic shutter, so I did have some issue with fluorescent lighting but that’s with any electronic shutter. To top it off, the 28-70mm f2.8 DG DN Contemporary lens does focus very closely as well. The minimum focus distance at the 28mm focal length is 7.5″ (1:3:3 magnification), while at 70mm, it is 15″ (1:4:6 magnification). This adds even more versatility to this zoom. Sigma 28-70mm f2.8 DG DN Contemporary Lens Image Quality: For the most part, bokeh is very pleasing, with only very slight onion ring and a nice, polygon-free shape even when stopped down to F4. The biggest reason for investing in the Sigma 28-70mm f/2.8 is that it's a much smaller, lighter and cheaper alternative to native-branded lenses. It's still capable of producing really high-quality images with sharp in-focus areas and soft, blurred, out-of-focus areas. Unlike some of the more expensive brands it doesn't have any lens stabilization, but if you're shooting on something like the Sony A7R IV the in-body stabilization makes up for it. Well yes, I know. That is why I just refered to the AoV. Olympus made a more conventional 14-35mm and 35-100mm f/2. But they are massive.

Vignetting is not a concern for the Sigma 28-70mm F2.8. It's only really noticeable at telephoto, and even there is minor and easily corrected. Bokeh Here’s another photo taken at f8 with the 28mm focal length. 640 ISO was used along with the Sigma fp L here as well.

In terms of video autofocus, the Sigma 28-70mm DG DN has the potential to be a really great option. Not only does it offer silent autofocus drive and very nicely-damped manual focus, but it also has well controlled focus breathing. There's only a bit at the 28mm wide-angle end and very little at all by the time you zoom in to 70mm. The Sony E mount may not have had the decades of development time of the Nikon F or the Canon EF mounts, but that hasn't stopped Sony from turning out a large collection of quality lenses. Sony mirrorless cameras now have almost as many options as DSLRs, with the exception of a few specialized lenses like tilt-shifts. That explosion of lens options, however, makes deciding which lens to add to your bag next a bit tougher to do. Zoom lenses in the 24 to 70ish range are pretty popular because they cover so much that they make great everyday lenses. So, it makes sense that manufacturers always seem to have at least a couple in their arsenal of lenses. Sigma definitely has some nice zooms in this range, and one that was recently introduced is the 28-70mm f2.8 DG DN Contemporary lens. What makes this lens intriguing is that even though it has a fixed maximum aperture of f2.8, which is pretty fast, it’s still a very compact lens. Let’s take a closer look at it. Sigma 28-70mm f2.8 DG DN Contemporary Lens Build Quality: Potentially a highly attractive 'step-up' lens for mirrorless shooters, Sigma promises that image quality from this compact zoom will be comparable to the Art-series 24-70mm F2.8. We've had the new lens for a few days, and we've been shooting with it on the Panasonic S1R so you can get a first look at its image quality. The Sigma 28-70mm for Sony lens features a rounded 9 blade diaphragm which creates an attractive blur to the out of focus areas of the image.Leica 24mm at f/8 Sigma 24mm at f/8 Sigma 70mm at f/2.8 Leica 70mm at f/2.8 Leica 70mm at f/8 Sigma 70mm at f/8 Strengths and Weaknesses When a scene is no longer interesting from every angle, Insta360’s latest camera simply transforms into a GoPro-like action camera -- or a 1-inch-sensor Leica, if you prefer. Announced on January 7 during CES 2020, the Insta360 One R is a modular action camera system that allows users to switch lens-sensor modules and accessories. A little color fringing can be apparent towards the edges and corners of the image frame at shorter focal lengths of 28-35mm, though it reduces to unnoticeable levels once you zoom in to 50mm and beyond. Why keep rehashing the same boring 70-200mm FL? As a 3rd party lens maker, how about something that differentiate you from the competitors like a 50-250 F2.8 sports lens?
