The exams are finally over, the sun is shining and celebration is in the air. For twins Chloe and Alex the future looks bright, if a bit uncertain. But turbulence is not far from the horizon and begins when Alex is in a car crash on the way home from a drinking binge with friends This book is so fun, such a fresh voice in romance! Suzanne Glidewell's debut is a sweet romance with themes of home and self-discovery set in Seattle. As someone who recently moved to WA, I enjoyed the references to Seattle-specific beers and neighborhoods that I have been in the process of exploring. Her characters are incredibly easy to root for, both multi-dimensional and loveable. Enjoyed this book immensely … 'somewhere in between' … that's where we (women) find ourselves along our life path until we discover that space where/when we know what we are worth and good at and pursue it without 'the need to conform to society or some perceived expectations'. Unfortunately this often happens only later in life when/once 'we have ripened on the window sill of life'. 'Motherhood' - is there a more valuable/purposeful 'job' than preparing balanced people for life … who become our pillars of society? … Courageous and thought-provoking book! Niki has hit the nail on the head - the dilemma a woman faces in the 'choices' she has regarding family vs career fulfilment. A salute to Niki and all mothers who are our role models! But this book is different - it’s genuinely funny (which is such a rarity) but it also has so much heart to it. You find yourself wanting so much happiness for both characters & you believe they DESERVE this happiness. Gentle and moving, The In-Between takes readers where few think they would want to go: deep into the world of hospice nursing. The combined beauty, faith, and compassion found in each patient’s death is meaningful and sublime.” —Theresa Brown, RN, New York Times bestselling author of The Shift

The story itself is a bit light and fluffy. Easy reading for a summer afternoon at the lake or a rainy day inside. The characters were generally believable, and their personal struggles are engaging. There's even some inclusion of First Nations culture, which is a key sector of the Cariboo demographic. The story felt genuine, and the conclusion was one I figured out, but I wasn’t quite sure of the how. I will leave that for you to discover. Vlahos was raised in a strict religious household, but began questioning her beliefs in high school after the sudden death of a friend. When she got pregnant at nineteen, she was shunned by her community and enrolled herself in nursing school to be able to support herself and her baby. But nursing soon became more than a job: when she focused on palliative care and hospice work, it became a calling.

The book is about changes—the ones that you can control, and the ones that you can’t. It’s about commitment and friendship. It’s about the stages in between where you have nothing but the unknown ahead of you. This book is for the ones who seek comfort in words with the hope of feeling less alone. For many people, the truth is stranger than fiction, and for others – well, they don’t let the truth get in the way of a good story! Dominique writes honestly and brilliantly, from the heart. Her willingness to be vulnerable and grapple openly with issues of feminism, marriage, law, ethics, and mothering makes this book a thought-provoking, brave, witty and refreshing read. This read is a little different for me, but I really enjoyed it! I LOVE books in dual perspectives and the author did a great job writing this in dual perspective! I adored Maura and found myself really rooting for her throughout the story. Thomas kind of got on my nerves a little bit, but I’m excited to see his character growth in the next book. We got hints of it in this book so I think he’s on an interesting journey!

I would add quite a few trigger warnings for readers: multiple rapes, suicide ideation, and self harm. This is certainly a book for mature readers only. As the two friends leave their mundane lives behind time and again to visit the in-between place, they begin to discover themselves and the love they hold for one another. But does such an escape come at a cost?I imagine Julie and her family dealing with the same questions while reconnecting to one another. Julie remembers Darla singing "Galway Bay" and "Danny Boy" when she was just eight years old.

I love a good mystery, and this one kept me guessing. Above all, however, this is a book about families and human relationships. Star Rating: B/c this ends on such a cliffhanger I am going to wait to give my full star rating until I read book #2. :) Was I murdered? Did I commit suicide? I don’t know if I’m in some sort of purgatory or if I’ve gone straight to hell.I don't always read novels like this, when I do it is very rare. Lately all I have read was surrealism and satire. This novel kind of falls in between paranormal/ supernatural and contemporary. It's a very sweet and touching novel. Nature is a big thing, a theme. There is a whole feast of description of the beautiful land that the three main characters Julie, Ian, and Virgil Blue inhabit. The book cover is also beautiful, and I'm assuming that it is portraying the land in the book.

This book is a wonderful and articulate summary of many writings and views on the conundrum of the privileged mother who knows she cannot have it all, if "ït all" includes being as present a mother and wife as she feels she needs to be. As the story unfolds, readers are introduced to the O'Dales' daughter, Darla, who communicates from her state of "in-between." These sections are reminiscent of Alice Sebold's The Lovely Bones in which the young victim speaks from beyond the grave. Catholicism and faith sit center-stage in this story, which in the beginning I found difficult to read as a Boston Catholic whose family left the church after the 2001 abuse revelations. Glidewell has a really beautiful way of writing about faith that brings a lot of depth to the story, so I found myself able to enjoy the story despite my own experiences in Catholicism. Two friends find a portal to another dimension and use this “in-between place” to avoid the stress of their everyday lives. What they don’t realize is that every time they enter, they alter reality. Her journey takes her deep into feminist philosophies as she struggles to understand the unfolding media- driven drama of the Oscar Pistorius trial while researching issues of ethics in the legal profession. Vlahos’scompassionate, beautifully written book contains profound wisdom. It is for anyone with an open heart who loves a good story and anyone who fears but would like to better understand hospice and the end of life.” —Katy Butler, New York Times bestselling author of The Art of Dying Well As angry as I was reading this book, I HAD TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENED TO HER! I was up rage reading really late. You get a very realistic look at what it’s like being married to a narcissist while also battling depression and the isolation that usually goes along with that.
