About this deal

Phenomena come to being by way of sensations – originating from the noumenal world – that are filtered and organized by the a priori intuitions of time, space and the Categories of Understanding.

I think what Thacker is making reference to is very much like – if not identical to – what Kant has referred to as the “noumenal” world: the “thing-in-itself.

I have spoken before about the serendipitous nature of picking books at random from my list, and this was a good demonstration of it.

In the 1990s, Thacker, along with Ronald Sukenick and Mark Amerika, established Alt-X Press, for which he edited the anthology of experimental writing Hard_Code. It, of course, opens up the question of the nature of that which our perceptions are perceptions of.

This idea leads to the final chapter of the book, titled “The Subharmonic Murmur of Black Tentacular Voids. Yes, I personally do believe there is something (independent of me) that corresponds to the chair I am sitting in.

But the world can mean many things, from a subjective experience of living in the world, to the objective, scientific study of geological conditions. During the course of this sixty books challenge, you will find that very few reviews of books will start with the mention of Jay-Z. As Thacker states: "Pessimism is the night-side of thought, a melodrama of the futility of the brain, a poetry written in the graveyard of philosophy.

The discussions on the long-term impact of climate change also evoke this reminder of the world-in-itself, as the specter of extinction furtively looms over such discussions.
