And of those that do find small differences, it's hard to truly show how much culture or stereotyped expectations play a role. Adult brains cannot be neatly categorised into male brains and female brains either. In a study analysing 1,400 brain scans, neuroscientist Daphna Joel and colleagues found " extensive overlap between the distributions of females and males for all grey matter, white matter, and connections assessed". That is, overall we are more similar to each other than different. One study even showed that women acted just as aggressively as men in a video game when they were told their gender would not be disclosed, but less so when told the experimenter knew if the participants were male or female. Toys are one thing, but traits are also prone to gendered stereotyping. Parents of boys often talk about how they are more boisterous and enjoy rougher play, while girls are more gentle and meek. The evidence suggests otherwise. Studies also show that girls who are heavily into princesses are more concerned with their appearance and more likely to "self-objectify – so they think of themselves as a sexual object," says Maas. The girls that scored highest on "sexualised gender stereotypes" also downplayed traits associated with intelligence. Early on, both girls and boys have been shown to view attractiveness as " incompatible with intelligence and competence" a study found.

It's therefore worth remembering why people are conditioned to think that boys are more boisterous and take note of the times this is not true. My daughter is certainly just as loud – if not more so – as her brother, while he also loves pretending to cook. While these are not necessarily representative examples, they also don't fit into our ideas of what boys and girls like. It would be easy for me to otherwise have highlighted my son's propensity to climb on everything and my daughter's preference for pink, glossing over the numerous times she plays with cars and he with dolls. And there had been "a tendency amongst successive prime ministers to shove into the Cabinet Office responsibilities that did not appear to fit conveniently elsewhere", such as drug policy and charity issues. The prevalence of private, single-sex high schools in the eastern suburbs is why the state government has prioritised the area for one of its high school mergers.

Language plays a powerful role too – girls reportedly speak earlier, a small but identifiable effect but this could be due to the fact that research also shows that mothers speak more to their baby girls than to baby boys. They speak more about emotions to girls too. In other words, we unknowingly socialise girls to believe they are more talkative and emotional, and boys aggressive and physical. Before this, he says it is a "feature" of the nature of government "that you can make observations about the weaknesses that you discern in other parts of government". Mr Gove says Boris Johnson "made clear" that his role was to "lead on preparations for Brexit, and in particular preparations for a potential no-deal scenario". Encouragingly, 97.5% of NAPs, 77.1% of Adaptation Communications, and 75% of NDCs submitted until December 2022 explicitly refer to gender, with a notable increase in the case of NDCs – 90% of the NDCs submitted in 2021 and 2022 mention gender, compared to 35% of those submitted in 2020. If we fail to understand that we are more alike from birth than we are different and treat our children accordingly, our world will continue to be gendered. Undoing these assumptions is not easy, but perhaps we can all think twice before we tell a little boy how brave he is and a little girl how kind or perfect she is.

Principal Nicholas Sampson said he had seen a doubling in interest in enrolments since the school announced its plans last year — from boys and girls. In fact, studies show that our own expectations tend to frame how we view others and ourselves. Parents have attributed gender neutral angry faces as boys while happy and sad faces are labelled as girls. Mothers are more likely to emphasise their boys' physical attributes – even setting more adventurous targets for boys than for girls. They also over-estimate crawling abilities for their sons compared to daughters, despite there being no reported physical difference. So, people's own biases could be influencing their children, and so reinforcing these stereotypes. I just know that this is a wonderful community and other single-sex boys communities that I've come from have been equally wonderful. At this year’s UN Climate Change Conference, COP 28, UN Women will ensure that women and girls’ rights, abilities, and needs are taken into account in climate debates and incorporated into government policies.Hugo Keith, counsel for the inquiry, begins his questioning of Levelling Up Secretary Michael Gove with questions about his ministerial roles throughout the COVID pandemic. Among those to be released are Palestinian women and children in administrative detention … These people should also have been released unconditionally, so a deal to release Israeli hostages and Palestinian administrative detainees is doubly welcome.”

Debt charity StepChange, which commissioned the survey, said it came after "two years of cost of living pressures" on household budgets, with prices remaining high despite the recent easing in the rate of inflation. Professor Harries, who will take the stand this afternoon, was deputy chief medical officer at the start of the pandemic, but her initial responses were much criticised later on.

StepChange chief executive Vikki Brownridge said: "People, especially those with children, understandably feel pressured around Christmas time to spend money to create special moments and memories with their loved ones." He said the transition had been a joy to watch — particularly as he saw boys push themselves academically to keep up with their newer peers. Fiji recognizes women and girls as agents of change and drivers of climate-resilient development. It has identified the specific functions that women have in different sectors, such as selling farm produce or fishing, as entry points for women to play an active part in the implementation of adaptation activities in these areas. Mr Gove added: "It became a sort of Mary Poppins bag into which different prime ministers will shove things in which they believe should be dealt with by the government nanny." The ceasefire deal includes a clause stipulating that for every 10 hostages that come home safely, there will be an additional day in which fighting is paused, up to a total of 10 days, and three times as many Palestinians in Israeli jails released.
