When a stage musical is filmed, the problem gets worse. Most of these simply take what works on stage and tries to recapture it using the same techniques and values. "Seven Brides" is my touchstone for this. The result is bunch of clumsy stagecraft that does not translate to cinema, combined with those radical shifts from the story to the songs. Usually the older shows have this problem, because the later ones though made for stage are informed by cinema.

While lighting, sound and vision are technically first-rate, considering the time limits imposed upon the crews (18 days of shooting time!), overall the film never delivers the excitement and raw energy of the stage production, and to be honest, it should never have tried to. It feels artificial and looks second-best. The audience reaction shots are intrusive and irritating instead of convincing, and who allowed them to turn up in t-shirts and jeans? It's obvious they' re only there for the filming, and the camera should have left them in the dark and concentrated on the action onstage. The dance choreography is in no way up to the more artful Agnes DeMille stylized dance/ballet sort of thing but here it's the score that counts and all those glorious melodies are given the full treatment. This is definitely one of the better filmed stage shows with excellent camera angles catching all of the nuances rather artfully.

Oklahoma! was one of the first of many revivals of classic American musicals that Nunn produced as the then-artistic director of the National Theatre. The mounting was praised as a fresh rethinking of a classic; the interpretation's major shift with the past involved Stroman's choreography. Stroman was hired with the understanding that she would redesign the famed Act One ballet sequence from the ground up, eschewing Agnes DeMille's famous work. In Stroman and Nunn's conception, the actors danced in the show's dream ballets, a break with the tradition of when a "Dream Laurey" and "Dream Curly" would be cast. This gets a lot right (Gloria Grahame, Gene Nelson and, especially, Charlotte Greenwood, your line-readings are missed!), but there seems to be the most recompensatory joy in the enthusiasm with which this cast delivers.
