About this deal

While the Samyang 35mm f/1.4 AS UMC is a manual focus lens, it still contains a focus chip on the lens that communicates with the focus system in your camera to assist in acquiring proper focus on your subject. When you look through the viewfinder, you will see that the camera will tell you which way to move focus to get proper focus using left and right arrows. When the camera thinks that focus is correct, it will show a circle instead of left/right arrows. At the time of the Sony’s release, I speculated that the thousands of a7 III owners — myself included — would probably prefer a 35mm f/1.8 that ditched custom buttons and weather-sealing in favor of affordability, and it was to many photographers’ frustration that Tamron decided a few months later to give the Sony system a second 35mm f/2.8 autofocus lens. Given that other full frame systems don’t even have one such lens (I await your corrections in the comments), it seemed an odd choice. Viltrox has done a generally good job, however, of nailing consistent autofocus in a very brief period. They are fast learners over there! Viltrox AF 35mm STM Image Quality

The lens generally handles and balances well when attached to a camera. The focus ring was a little stiff at first, but got much better after several weeks of use. One huge advantage of this lens, in my opinion, is its large 77mm filter thread. When compared to other 35mm lenses in this review, this is the only lens in the group that features a 77mm filter thread. This means that you can use your standard polarizing, ND and other filters without having to worry about buying smaller filters or step-up rings. For me, this is certainly a huge convenience factor when working in the field.A noter le Samyang a pas mal de focus breathing par rapport au Sony. Le Sony permet également une mise au point beaucoup plus rapprochée 22cm contre 29cm pour le Samyang The other category of photographers who also will really appreciate a portable lens that has great image quality is landscape photographers, or basically, anyone who does outdoor, nature, and other types of photography that demand maximum image quality when stopped-down.

Un des points fort de cet objectif est le commutateur qui permet de basculer entre 2 modes. Le Mode 2 transforme la bague de mise au point en une bague d’ouverture sans clics très pratique en vidéo et en photo It comes in versions to fit Nikon, Canon EOS and Sony/Maxxum. I'm testing the Nikon version here. You can make the usual extrapolations for other brands. With a simpler camera with only one big focus confirmation dot, focus the lens just a little closer until the dot just starts to turn off — but that's for my sample of lens; yours may be different. Unlike crappy Sony lenses that arrive with all sorts of microscopic white specs on them, this Rokinon lens arrived perfectly clean. By contrast, the Samyang AF 35mm f/1.8 would double as a nifty fifty when attached to something like an a6500. With its straight 8-bladed diaphragm, this 35mm f/1.4 should make 8-pointed sunstars on bright points of light. One of the most demanding things you can do with any lens is to try to photograph the night sky. A 35mm prime is often very useful for medium-close but still wide-angle nightscape or astro-landscape photos, and since nightscape photography may often involve just as much hiking and even mountain-climbing as traditional landscape photography, once again weight is a concern. Generally speaking, though, image quality at wide-open apertures obviously becomes extremely important to a nightscape photographer, and thus these photographers are usually much more willing to lug around a heavy lens if that is required to get sharp detail in the corners of their images.

The bokeh looks very similar to that of the Sony 35mm, although upon closer inspection, our Sony 35mm lens bokeh balls do look somewhat cleaner. Unlike the 75mm f/1.8 lens, the new 35mm f/1.8 does have weather sealing, which is a welcome addition. Mount Although at minimum focusing distance the Samyang does not performs as well as when you use it at normal distance 1-3m. The Sony has better sharpness at min focusing distance Since f/22 is a stop smaller than any of Nikon's other f/1.4 lenses provide, you may have to set it to f/16 or larger to clear the aperture-ring feeler pin on most Nikon SLRs when mounting it to a camera.

Samyang AF 35mm f/1.8 FE MTF Charts

The lens is lightweight plastic which means that it doesn’t have a refined or solid feel to it, but it does keep it at a shade over 200 grams — and keep in mind that the Sony alternative is a third heavier. This Nikon-mount version works great with every Nikon camera made since 1977, digital and 35mm, auto and manual focus. (the lens of course is manual-focus only, and works great on AF and digital SLRs.) But there were no 35mm f/1.8 options meaning that for anyone who wanted a bit more subject separation when it came to things like environmental portraits, the only choices were the huge, heavy, and vastly more expensive f/1.4 lenses from Sony and Sigma (and more recently, Samyang itself). This new optic is comprised of 10 elements in 8 groups including 2 aspherical glass elements and 2 high refractive lenses, and employs an iris diaphragm with nine rounded aperture blades. This lens is supplied with front and rear lens caps, petal-type lens hood (which is reversible for transporting) and a soft lens pouch. Filter size is 77mm.

As with the AF hold button and dual mode switch, the action of the focus ring can be customized with the optional Samyang Lens Station. (Image credit: Matthew Richards) Performance Until a few years ago, there were very few options at 35mm for Sony users. Samyang and Tamron introduced f/2.8 lenses, Samyang’s being compact and Tamron preferring macro functionality. Barrel distortion is present at -1.62%, not unexpected in a 35mm lens and correctable in software if required.Sell the kit you’re not using to MPB. Trade in for the kit you need to create.
