About this deal

I now understand why desperate people find religion, or end up believing in aliens or conspiracy theories.

Self-esteem, work success, coercive relationships and friendships are all put under the microscope in this way, with characters sometimes given a second chance to get it right. With gorgeous illustrations by Shawn Harris, here is a book that is truly for all ages, as only the best stories are. This is not really sci-fi, it's more like fantasy as it doesn't get into the pseudo-science/theoretical aspect of parallel worlds at all.

Though Zach and Leo almost instantly believe that the curse is real and not some hallucination brought on by Lucy’s recent trauma, Soledad chooses to help Lucy despite the fact she does not believe in curses. Housed in a luxury clamshell case with a metal plaque, this spectacular tome is presented in a red canvas tote bag to preserve its craftsmanship. In this book, Jonty shows us that by facing up to the impossible commands of Jesus, we come to the end of our own will and determination, and end up at Jesus' feet. I mean, come on, how can you not love a book where the raccoons declare, ‘We only bite for justice’? A full-time book nerd who works in publishing for her day job, Thea currently resides in Astoria, Queens with her partner and rambunctious cat.

They’ve both got baggage and we learn about this as the book progresses and there are some darker topics that appear later on. Immerse yourself in this novel, and let Eggers’ physical, fast-paced writing — which is at the height of its power here — carry you through his wildly inventive narrative. I absolutely cannot stand it in books when a solution/villain/etc is (purposely) painfully clear to the readers, but not to the protagonists until a few chapters before the end. It is about love in all its mysterious and wonderful forms – the romantic (big tick), but also the love between friends, parents and children, cranky neighbours and animals… even love for a cause and ultimately, for ourselves.

Standouts aside (I see you, Charlotte) it’s a genre of children’s book that can go real bad, real fast. Keep in mind, this cheesy assessment is coming from the girl that laughs every time she reads the word “nipple”. Johannes’ loyalty, friendship, and commitment to a noble purpose, even as his sense of self shifts, the stakes are raised, and last-minute changes to the plan occur, make him an admirable character.
