About this deal

In the Whitechapel exhibition, archival material sits alongside work from a range of queer artists including Tom Burr, Evan Ifekoya, duo Hannah Quinlan and Rosie Hastings and Prem Sahib. Each is concerned in some way with how LGBT culture plays out in the physical world, and how queer people navigate and leave their mark on the city. For general historical bibliography the Bibliography of British and Irish History (BBIH) produced by the Inistitute for Historical Research and the Royal Historical Society, is available via major research libraries. Ahead of his screening of Lost in London , I sat down with Woody Harrelson to ask him a few questions.

Beyond spectacular. This is, no pun intended (well, maybe a small one), a book in which you get totally, completely lost. Davies' comments are always pointe, which makes looking at the pictures even more enjoyable. So much gone! Between German bombers and what might be euphemistically called "urban renewal", the wonder isn't that so much is gone. It's almost a miracle that so much is left. Palatial house in French Renaissance style, designed by William Burn for the 5th Duke of Buccleuch; used as government offices from 1917. Work led by Campkin at University College London’s Urban Laboratory has shown that nightlife, in particular, has been hit hard. From 2006 to 2017, the number of LGBT clubs, bars and performance spaces in London dropped dramatically, from 121 to 51. The phenomenon defies easy explanation, but changing habits and the city’s seemingly unstoppable economic growth play a part. “Some of the media narratives were around technology and Gaydar, Grindr, how that’s changed everything,” says Campkin. “That didn’t really come up so much in the research we did … We noticed that, in a lot of the cases, there was a link to some kind of larger-scale development, or small-scale luxury residential development.”

Ancestry have indexed and placed on line images of the Admission Papers for Freemen of the City of London, 1681-1925. These are from the records of the City itself, but include reference to the livery company of the admitted person. They cover all types of admission, but there are some gaps (mostly in the 1680s and 1770s-1780s). Full information is given in a leaflet from LMA. Really interesting read with anecdotal, documentary and photographic evidence of many of the 16th to 19th century buildings and entire streets that have been removed by way of urban renewal, war damage and/or personal agenda. An eye-opening look at how the ever changing London is something that is a characteristic of the city itself. I am still haunted by the image of the amazing Euston Station stone arch and columns that no longer exist (see below). 7 out of 12, Three Star read. Lord Campbell, along with the Society for the Suppression of Vice, introduced the world’s first law criminalizing pornography, the Obscene Publications Act 1857, and, for the first time, it gave the courts power to seize and destroy offending materials. Even at the time the law was strongly opposed and its legacy continues to cause controversy about what in Britain could be judged obscene, by whom and on whose behalf.
