Ear cones such as these are intended to soften and draw wax out of your ear, using a flame, but though this product has Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Authority (MHRA) approval, it's not recommended as an ear wax treatment by the NHS or NICE. Proponents of ear candling claim that it pulls wax and “debris” from your ear, by placing a lit, hollow, cone-shaped candle into the ear canal. Ear candling fans believe that the heat from the candle creates a suction that pulls out all the gunk from your ear canal. But does it work?

More broadly, the clinical evidence says that inserting foreign bodies into the ear canal is potentially dangerous and can cause injuries to the ear canal or ear drum. In severe cases, the hearing loss it causes can lead to anxiety, stress, social isolation and depression. Products that you'll commonly find in major high street chains aren't necessarily your best bet either. We asked leading expert, Kevin Munro, Professor of Audiology at the University of Manchester, to assess how effective and appropriate a selection of products were for home use.
A 2022 RNID survey found that 71% of respondents had resorted to attempting to remove ear wax themselves, although two-thirds did not feel confident doing this. Taylor also thinks that some of the popularity behind earwax removal videos might be linked to the ubiquity of ear buds. The clinical evidence says that you should never insert foreign bodies the ear canal as these objects are potentially dangerous and can cause injuries to the ear canal or ear drum. He noted that there is little evidence that one type of ear drop is generally better than any other, and there is only weak evidence that pre-treatment drops on their own are enough to cause ear wax to soften and be expelled from the ear – and only in a small proportion of people.
Historically, people were warned not to irrigate their own ear due to concerns that the high water pressure could damage the ear. However, studies show that rubber bulb irrigation, which uses lower pressure, could be worth trying - and could be successful in around half of cases. Options include sodium bicarbonate 5% ear drops, hydrogen peroxide, medical-grade olive or almond oil drops. Research on which method is best – or whether water or salt water (saline) works as well – is inconclusive. There are many ear drop products that soften wax in the ear, and some like this include bulb syringes that allow you to squirt water into the ear for irrigation after using the softening treatment. The National Institute of Health and Care Excellence (NICE) advises against trying to remove earwax or clean your ears by inserting small objects in your ear, even cotton buds .
