So when we first got Chris and Danny, it was an adjustment. Mia, slowing down then has never been a puller like I say, but Chris and Danny are now both adults, Chris is 4 and Danny is 5 or 6. The Halti brand claims that their head collar is designed to allow your dog to pant and yawn if it needs to. Senior dogs (those over 7 years) may naturally start to exercise less by walking rather than running and playing. It maybe helpful to break up your older dogs exercise into smaller sets so for example 2 x 30 min walks rather than going out for an hour. It is important to remember that dogs will often keep walking and playing regardless so it is up to us to ensure our dogs activity levels are appropriate. A head collar is primarily seen as a training aid. When your dog pulls against their lead they feel the pressure on their nose and snout as opposed to on their chest or body. This can make them react to the pulling more, and also may mean that they shouldn’t just pull against the pressure. This means the action of pulling is paired with an unpleasant consequence, making dogs less likely to do it. No product is a magic bullet, but the HALTI harness prevents dogs from pulling better than a standard lead and collar because that is precisely what the product has been designed to do. It works. It does what it is designed to do. You will be able to achieve more pleasant dog walks as a result. It's that simple.
Which product is best for me?
Some dogs are hypersensitive to something on their face, and it might be easier to teach them to walk nicely on the leash than to wear a head halter. At the same time, many of my reactive dog clients have benefitted enormously from the extra control that a dog head halter provides. It's very rare a product leaves me short of words, but the HALTI No-Pull Harness and its matching HALTI lead fall into that category. Not because they're necessarily bad, but not because they're necessarily good. More, I can't actually work them out. When we first leave home to go for a walk at our local park, we have to pass various streets to get there and as soon as I open the gate to leave, there's always about a minute of excitement where they forget their walking manners while I'm busy shutting the gate behind me.
