Unfortunately, Nextbase’s dash cam companion app doesn't feel quite as polished as the 622GW. While the interface is generally well designed, it can take a while for video thumbnails to appear and even longer for video clips to buffer. On one side, there's a rubber cover over a port for attaching a rear camera, while the other side sees a power button and an SD card slot. At the bottom of the touchscreen and, there's a red button that you can tap to make sure important footage is saved. The 622GW sensor should do this automatically if you hit the brakes relatively hard, but the physical button gives some extra reassurance - as well as allowing you to save footage like near-misses, which may not require harsh braking, for example. New image stabilization technology also does its bit to ensure buttery smooth footage, cleverly soaking up bumps and vibrations from potholes or poor road surfaces.
Before you hit the road with the Nextbase 622GW, you’ll need to set your language and region settings before the onboard GPS sorts the time and date automatically. On the plus side, the low-light and extreme weather recording modes are great for capturing crisp footage in low light, heavy rain, fog etc. New image stabilisation tech also works well to smooth out footage on bumpy, potholed roads. However, the footage quality means files are large, so Nextbase suggests investing in a 128GB U3 SD card, which isn’t supplied. Both of these dash cams also have a feature called Emergency SOS, which alerts the emergency services and shares your location if a collision is detected and the driver is unresponsive. To determine this, the system first calls your phone; if you don’t respond, your GPS position will be shared with local emergency services. The usefulness of these features is questionable, with most of these alerts coming in the form of indecipherable bleeps. However, the addition of voice control is good and by uttering the words “Okay Garmin”, you can instruct the camera to save important footage or take a picture, for example. Operating temperatures for the 622GW are -22 to 140 degrees Fahrenheit. Nextbase was kind enough to point out that this is for the entire device, and not the chip temperatures that some vendors provide. I’d mention the vendors, but I’m still investigating the claim. Nextbase warranties the 622GW for one year. If you want the best, this is it The 622GW’s sensor is anOmnivision OS08A10, which I’ve never seen before. I’m sure a large part of the credit for quality goes to this sensor, but Nextbase’s claims about tuning the quad-core processor inside have merit as well.
