They are substances that are identified as Marine pollutants in the IMDG Code Index or substances that satisfy the GHS classification criteria for Hazardous to Aquatic Environment Acute 1, Chronic 1, or Chronic 2. A study by Wang et al. [ 8] reported that several strains of Bt did not inhibit hyphal growth of P. ostreatus and P. geesteranus. Our current study also found no detectable inhibition of growth by treating straw substrate with Bti and S. feltiae. Substrate weights among the three treatments remained the same over time, but the substrate weight within each treatment changed as expected. For instance, the documented weight increase immediately after treatment can be attributed to water being added to the substrate. Afterwards, the substrate weight steadily decreased over time across all treatments. The decrease in weight can be attributed to the mycelium of P. ostreatus and P. columbinus degrading and consuming the straw substrate over time, thereby decreasing the overall container weight. Homemade gnat killer spray: A mixture of half a cup of water, half a cup of isopropyl alcohol, and a teaspoon of dish liquid can be filled in a spray bottle. This mixture can be sprayed on the gnats directly to kill them. They are one of the most common indoor plant pests, affecting thousands of households around the UK each year, and, as anyone who has had a major infestation can attest to, fungus gnats are as hardy and tenacious as they are annoying!

Diet & Weight Management

The main limitation of this method is that it only kills adult gnats, and therefore doesn’t completely break the lifecycle, or do anything to kill the 100s of larvae and eggs which will still remain in your plant soil. That said, it did kill a fair deal of adult gnats, meaning that the Three additional bioassays were conducted over time with P. ostreatus. The aforementioned methods were used, except the pasteurized straw inoculated with P. ostreatus was infested with fungus gnats prior to treating with Bti and S. feltiae ( Figure 2B,C). These changes were implemented because treatment with Bti and S. feltiae prior to infesting could have influenced oviposition behavior by the fungus gnats. Bioassay containers were infested with gravid fungus gnats the day after inoculating with P. ostreatus and prior to treating with Bti and S. feltiae. Bioassay containers enclosing straw inoculated with P. ostreatus were infested with five gravid female fungus gnats ( Lycoriella sp.) from a commercial oyster mushroom facility on 23 June 2020, 07 July 2020, and 14 July 2020 corresponding to three separate bioassays ( Figure 2B). Infested containers were held in an incubator at 21 °C. The gnats will now crawl through the small holes in the cling film, but will be unable to escape and will drown in the vinegar

In the third bioassay with P. ostreatus, significantly fewer fungus gnats emerged from the Bti compared to the S. feltiae treatment and the untreated control ( Figure 4C). Significantly fewer fungus gnats also emerged from straw treated with S. feltiae compared to the untreated control ( Figure 4C: F 2, 27 = 24.53; p< 0.0001). The Bti treatment resulted in an 88% reduction and S. feltiae treatment resulted in an 53% reduction in fungus gnat emergence compared to the water control. Here's the cool thing about it--because humans, animals, birds, and fish have acidic and not alkaline digestive tracts, the Bti toxins don't have any effect on us. In fact, Bti is used in mass quantities by cities and municipalities worldwide to control mosquito populations. Because it's a bacteria that's found naturally in soils anyway, there's less fear of using it than more dangerous chemical solutions. Another thing that's nice about Bti is that once it's released, the active ingredient will dissipate after about 72 hours, so even if it were harmful to humans, the exposure is limited. Soak mosquito bits in a gallon of water. Repeat steps 1 to 7 for a fortnight. If the gnats are still not wiped out, or at least heavily curtailed, by this regimen, it would seem you are dealing with “Rambo gnats”. If these cheaper, natural methods still haven’t managed to rid you of your gnat infestation, then you can escalate things with these more powerful gnat killers. Hydrogen Peroxide Bti persists in the soil for up to 5 months ensuring thorough, complete and lasting eradication. Nothing comes close to its effectiveness. It did reduce the number of larvae wriggling about underneath the soil, but it didn’t come close to eliminating the problem completely. Because many plants can’t be chronically under-watered for a long time, it means that once you resume normal watering, the gnats will just multiply again.
