And in this case, I would say the anise replaces the typical clean top note (coriander / sage / salvia / pine / eucalyptus / menthol take your pick), the black currant, pepper and ginger (or galanga) replacing the lavender, bergamot, and geranium notes, the tolu balsam the tonka, and all the aforementioned together with vanilla and cedar replace the patchouli hum at the base. However once fully dried down that goes away and everything comes together for a very nice classy elegant scent.That awful women's perfume of that era that was very strong, always over applied, and tended to completely fill the room to the point you wanted to gag. The dry down consists of a long voyage through an Indian / Chinese oriental sweet ambary scent and yummy vanilla. As far as eaux de toilette go, though, this is pretty exceptional, both in terms of performance and depth. If you're a wannabe bad boy looking to stand out in 'da club', this will project like a beast and distinguish you from all the other Sauvage wearing sheeple.It sort of has an addicting grape bubble gum ball note far back behind the dominant herbal fruity vanilla notes that keep making me smell to get closer to it but it still keeps its distance. The fragrance creates an extremely elegant impression thanks to the synergy of warm cedarwood, exotic patchouli and delicate vanilla, which will last longest on your skin. opium, though, is powdery, and doesn't have such a hefty midsection (azzaro misses the hefty midsection as well, it just feels empty compared to rive gauche). It's very similar to the EDT as far as its smell, only if you can imagine the EDT in a much richer, deeper, and sensuous form. I would also venture to say that the vanilla lends its sweetness to the semi-tart black currant, forming an almost jam-like profile.
