The physical setting of the story reveals that the events take place in a town or village next to the sea. The sea defences that protect the coastline from the waves are an important part of the physical setting which also has symbolic significance.

The setting throughout the short story changes several times, and it feels like there are two storylines in the short story. The short story of the same title (published in the Bath Short Story Award Anthology 2018) is told from Adam’s point of view, focusing on his perception of events. The parents of the missing child are mentioned only in one line. When I thought about turning it into a novel, my first question was: “Who is the mother and what impact does this event have on her life?” If she was not only Christian, but in training for the priesthood, this would give me the opportunity to explore how the experience could affect her faith, as well as her family relationships. Once I realised that the emotional heart of the novel was to be found in Rachel’s story, this became the driving force of the book.indirect accusations from the police that he is a pedophile murderer – adding to the eagerness to keep Ah, yes.’ Clearly, Thelma had been waiting for this last agenda item, and now set her jaw and shoulders for battle.

This quotation shows that Michael feels the need to be comforted as the sentences are short and simple and childish vocabulary such as “Mumma” (l. 5) which adds to the The story begins with a media source, Michael at the police station: "I'm at the police station. Again." (l. 1).

On purpose.” (p. 1 ll. 10) This is an example where there are both long and short sentence structures, it also shows Hilary Taylor’s use of incomplete sentences. It tells us that this is not the first time he's come to the police station, so we know what happened, but not what happened. Although this is the story of families torn apart by tragedy, Taylor writes with warmth and wit. She’s an astute observer, collecting quirks and foibles in the same way that Adam collects fossils. Sometimes we need the dark to contrast with the light: the study in grief is balanced by an exploration of kindness, of friendship, of faith, of love. negative and sullen imagery in lines 4-12: “There was blood and mud on her face, and her eyes were shut.

I loved Hilary Taylor’s short story – understated perfection - so I was a little nervous at seeing it extended into a full-length novel. I shouldn’t have been. Taylor is a gifted writer, incapable of putting a foot wrong, even in the shadow of dinosaurs.

Mary refuses to face reality whether it is her failing eyesight or the slow erosion of her land by the sea. She gives poor advice to her teenage son Adam. He interprets everything literally and his point of view is one of the delights of this novel. In the short story, the main character is the fossil hunter, and the main relationship is between him and his mother. The parents of the missing child appear in only a few lines, but I began to ask questions about them, particularly about the mother. Who was she? How did this event affect her? What did she do? What about her family? What if she had a religious faith? She became Rachel, a trainee priest, and I began to develop ideas about her story arc, and those of my other two main characters – Adam and his mother, Mary.
