About this deal

Leah Hannell is visiting her sister’s family at their luxury resort in Lake Garda, Italy for the first time since the death of her niece, Amy, after a forced temporary leave of absence from her job. When she learns that the circumstances surrounding Amy’s death are anything but clear, Leah decides to investigate what really happened despite active attempts to dissuade her. The way Heidi has written and described the venue really makes you feel like you are on holiday with the characters, especially as Laila (like me) is a people watcher! A] heart-pounding debut…Even avid suspense readers won’t be able to predict all the twists. Cooper is off to a strong start.”— Publishers Weekly A domestic suspense novel set partially in Italy and partially in Derby, UK. Chapters alternate between three women. Leah, Joanna, and Amy each tell their stories in turn and we root for each one. Aside from being absorbed by the dynamics of a family of 4 (mum, dad and two teenage boys) and a couple of newly-weds who don’t seem to act very much in love, Leila also has her own relationship struggles, a relationship that feels strained from the start. It didn’t help of course that James decided to spend their money on this getaway while they need money for another round of IVF. Leila's desire to get pregnant is something that weighs on them and defines this couple in the story.

The Other Guest by Helen Cooper is available on July 26th. I look forward to reading more from the mega-talented Helen Cooper. Somehow, our main perp knows Aunt Leah is going to Italy and will want to look into Amy’s death? The same perp somehow know’s Amy’s friend and her family’s private housekeeper even though, he (a foreigner on a week long biz trip) was holed up in his private villa and by his own admission was “never there.” The dude sells watches for hell’s sake yet, somehow he is making things happen like the mafia.

Fans of British mysteries will love this debut…It is difficult to put down. This is one that readers may not figure out fully, if at all, in advance of the denouement, but the author ties all the secrets together in a most satisfying reveal.”– Library Journal (starred review)

I loved the premise of two women who don't seem to be connected, but ultimately get entangled in some dangerous situations that reveal their connection. It is very readable and it made me what to read to the end to find out who was the murderer however it was just a flat book. If I worked in publishing I would be having a word with the cover designer because it has no reference to Laila (who never gets in the pool) and really it should say guest(s). Asides from that I did enjoy it, the people watching (which I can totally relate) how when we get Em and Rosie's p.o.v it reinforces how we shouldn't judge because you don't fully know the situation. Also how well do you ever know a person. What extent would you go to or would you choose when your given all ultimatum. 3.75 stars from me. Olivia’s dad never actually has any discussion with his daughter but he assumes one killed the other because of a tiff on a camera. To say it's categorised as a thriller, I didn't find it very thrilling - excuse the pun. It's a bit mysterious maybe but honestly, all that build up for, in my opinion, not a fantastic ending. I was really waiting for some big plot twist or a seriously dramatic turn of events. Sadly, it never came. Both Joanna and Leah get into dangerous situations in the book, some due to their own making which ramped up the anxiety on their behalf. Some were due to their natural curiosity and helpful natures. Each of them acted in a way to endanger themselves on occasion. This reader enjoyed the anxiety for their safety in those scenes. The author did an excellent job crafting the suspenseful parts of the tale. The way she tied the diverse elements together was very satisfying. This is a book that requires constant attention as the plot wavers, hides and changes in a neat and fascinating way. There is a touch of Agatha Christie in the way the characters and the plot swerves, steadies and takes another route, which is fascinating to read and is extremely addictive once begun.
