About this deal

The higher-end switch models are interesting too, especially the Enterprise models with 25 Gbps SFP28 ports. Most switches with lots of SFP+ or SFP28 ports are much more expensive, but you pay for that by being limited to the UniFi controller software. These aren’t going to be a replacement for a typical data center switch until Ubiquiti can prove they have the software and features to match. Ubiquiti’s hardware tends to lead their software, so I’ll be interested to see how the development of that goes. As it exists right now, Ubiquiti’s current Layer 3 switch feature-set is still underwhelming, but they have been slowly making progress. If you’re interested in the L3 switches, I would still suggest waiting for their software and firmware to catch up. I've had an Enterprise 8 PoE for a while, and it does get warm in normal use. The fan whirs up when the switch is booting up, but is mostly silent during normal operation. I would expect the Pro 8 PoE to be similar, even with minor differences in port speed and the addition of some metal to the enclosure. Lite 8 PoE and Lite 16 PoE

The switch delivered excellent performance via its 2.5Gbps ports which also worked well as PoE power senders. I tried them with multiple PoE devices simultaneously, including a BC500 cam, the U6 Enterprise, and a few other PoE+ Wi-Fi access points, and they all worked flawlessly.

MikroTik is another common option for home and small business networks. MikroTik specializes in low-cost, high-performance switches, routers, and wireless equipment. They make a lot of similar equipment to Ubiquiti, without the UI polish or big marketing budget. Additionally, its (2) sine-wave, AC outputs can power 110V, AC devices, including a modem and gateway. The USW Mission Critical also features a 1.3" LCM color touchscreen that concisely displays key system and connection insights. This switch can be monitored or configured from anywhere with the powerful, intuitive UniFi Network web application and mobile app. For comparison, the Zyxel XS1930-12HP features two SFP+ ports, but its ten PoE++ ports are all 10Gbps Mulit-Gig. The table below will highlight the differences between the two. Ubiquiti Switch Enterprise 8 PoE vs Zyxel XS1930-12: Hardware specifications Overall, the Enterprise 8 PoE proved to be a fast 2.5Gbps Mulit-Gig switch. Its performance was on par, if not better, than others of similar specs I’ve tried. Runs hot and requires long boot times In the end, I had to use two TP-Link TL-SM5310-T adapters for the testing, and it was impossible to know if they caused them to perform slower than a true 10Gbps connection, as shown on the charts. Considering the uplink role, though, the SFP+ ports’ sustained rate, in my case, was still more than fast enough.

If that list seems a little overwhelming or confusing, it helps to look at them one at a time. We’ll start with the most similar and cheapest, and deal with the larger and more expensive models last. Enterprise 8 PoE This is a simple comparison. The two 60W 802.3bt PoE++ ports become 30W 802.3at PoE+, but all eight Ethernet ports move from 1 Gbps to 2.5 Gbps. The Pro 8 PoE mentions metal as part of its enclosure, the Enterprise 8 PoE does not. The Enterprise 8 PoE is slightly heavier and hotter, but they are mostly the same otherwise. We'll start by looking at all of the current options for UniFi gateways, including some older ones that Ubiquiti no longer lists on their official store. Current Gateways All UniFi Cloud Gateways, as of November 2023. These models are newer, and they all run UniFi OS. They have been called UniFi OS Consoles, Gateway Consoles, and now Cloud Gateways. They act as routers or firewalls, and also run the UniFi software applications like Network and Protect. These can’t be used with Cloud Keys, cloud services, or a self-hosted UniFi Network application.
