Also recommend turning the subtitles on in case you have a hard time understanding her strange voice. It does not teach you many fundamental basic Japanese structure and start your journey with polite langauge. When I started learning Japanese, I did MNN 1 in a language school, then I moved and switched to Genki 2 in another language school. It's the question on every Japanese Language student's mind: what is the best Japanese language textbook for me? A workbook that, through writing using the vocabulary and grammatical items found in Minna no Nihongo Shokyu I Second Edition Main Text, allows the learner to firmly grasp what has been studied.

So I dont like Minna no Nihongo, because it really doesn’t have any grammatical explanation, just examples, and all in japanese; i am okay with the japanese, but you know, still no explanation. In my own experience, flipping through the lesson/completing the exercises and switching to a second book to refrence what the hell is going on was extremely annoying for me. Beginning with practicing reading characters and numbers, the learner is then presented with various types of reading material, including notices, letters, interviews, quizzes and surveys. When you can just explain something in a simple manner without having to dig deep into the world of grammatical terms, why do so? The Japanese exercise book comes with a booklet answer at the end of the book, which is of course in japanese.I supplemented early on with a look through the Tae Kim sections on casual forms of verbs, since I knew that was what I would see/hear a lot of in culture I was likely to consume.

First and foremost, it is important to specify you should at least have learned some basic Japanese before using both books. l found resources like Human Japanese to be super enjoyable because it was all material I knew already and it made for excellent review at the same time. I feel like I learned a lot (I probably wouldn't be able to get just from the main book's context) thanks to this companion book.

Although the overall structure is very similar for both series, one of the main differences for the textbooks is that the instructions are given in English for Genki while there is no English featured in the main textbook for Minna no Nihongo (the translation can be found in a separate workbook). Omdat beide series onder diverse benamingen voorkomen en diverse delen omvatten wordt het al snel verwarrend. However, for all those who don't, get to learn the basic japanese alphabets beforehand - this book has them at the beginning, but not the translation of the sounds in rōmaji (latin letters) nor the sound of each character. So far, though, I do like the layout of MNN as a book to embed what I’ve learned more firmly in my mind.
