About this deal

and that unsettling, insidious fear of “letting the wrong person in” did underscore the book as I was writing it, definitely. Although she wants to help her, Alix fears that this case may be far more involved than any she's explored in her podcast thus far. If you add in bad vibes, off notes and some weird and uncomfortable situations that your reactions switch between sadness, concern and shock in equal measure. She loves that Nathan thinks she’s pretty, but she also wishes that Nathan could see the beauty in less conventionally attractive women too.

It had so much promise, and I was waiting for a big twist (the real Josie having been killed years before, or Josie taking Alix’s place or something), but no. Josie tells Alix she is about to make big changes in her life and wants Alix to document it for her podcast. King uses the phrase keeping it on the down-low in a way that suggests he probably doesn’t understand how this phrase is currently used—and has been used for quite a while. When two women who share a birthday meet, a journalist becomes the subject of her own true-crime mystery. This book is no different, and the multiple povs really give us insight into the various narrators inner thoughts and feelings while the tension ramps up around them. So when she “accidentally” bumps into her “birthday twin” again, a few days later, and Josie suggests that she might be an interesting subject, because Alix can follow her AS she changes her life instead of after someone has ALREADY done so, Alix decides to record a “test session” to see how it goes. I knew from jump Josie was crazy and had probably lied about her birthday and somehow targeted Alix before the dinner because she went home and googled Alix Summer when Alix had not told her her last name. this story was so addicting, i finished it in 24 hours because i simply couldn’t wait to figure out the truth. I didn't like the fact that one of them is the typical needy/oppressed housewife who envies and wants another's life, there are so many books like that out there.

The storyline revolves around two women who share the same birthday, were born in the same city, hospital, chose the same place to celebrate their 45th birthday. And she was the central character in If It Bleeds, a novella in the 2020 collection of the same name. So the impetus for using birthday twins as an opening into the novel definitely did not spring from my own experience. One of the women is a podcaster and the small piece of information about being birthday twins starts a relationship that is faster than a runaway locomotive.
