About this deal

Great pace, great finish to so many stories, this feels like it could be a very satisfying end to my time in Bruncliffe with Samson and Delilah, but I don't want it to be, and right there is a mark of the success of this 8th instalment. I can't really comment too much on the plot because it ties up so many loose ends, and a fair amount of motive and villain identity is known before this book even starts I have grown very fond of the cast of characters and the well-described locations and had been eagerly awaiting this episode. It tied the narrative strands from the previous books together very well, though I still don't understand exactly how international crime and money laundering work! While Samson and Delilah combine resources once more, before too long they have become embroiled in untangling this mystery which has lain at the town’s core for decades. It is a mystery that some would much prefer stay buried.

I have enjoyed this series immensely from book one and would say please read the other books before this one as this brings together threads from a few of the previous books. in fact they were all leading up to this book which makes me hope that this is not the last that we hear from the Dales detective agency. I would like to thank Netgalley and Pan Macmillan for an advance copy of Date with Evil, the eighth novel to feature Samson O’Brien and Delilah Metcalfe of the Dales Detective Agency, set in the fictional Yorkshire town of Buncliffe. It should just be straightforward, however things in Bruncliffe so rarely are. Especially when Matty insists that Delilah, with her own wealth of local knowledge, works with Samson on this sensitive investigation.

Following on from Date with Betrayal this new novel delights with its combination of beguiling charm and witty ingenuity. Look out for Date With Justice coming soon! I must say that I hadn't even realised this book was out until I saw it on the shelves in W H Smith! The series stars Delilah Metcalfe, who is a young woman that makes a living while running a dating agency. She works with Samson O’Brien, who is a private detective that runs Dales Detective Agency and ends up becoming his partner. Little do the detective duo know that several of their cases are about to collide when identifying the whereabouts of the missing man becomes something far more sinister.

I loved Delilah and Samson together, they turn out to be a really good combo – good for each other and their business. Delilah ends up putting a lot into helping Samson and they both solve the mysteries the town brings them. Samson and Delilah do not work well with each other, actually she hates him. But with funny circumstances, call it fate, they have to work together. It doesn’t help that both his detective agency and Delilah’s business are lettered the same, ‘DDA’ and in the same building! They will have to put the past behind them if there is to be any business coming their way, and now with suspicious deaths, they embark on different mysteries in every book. the mystery here is how is it all going to be resolved. The stakes are high, the danger greater than ever as the villain of the piece sees their plans fast unravelling, but will the Dales Detective Agency succeed in discovering the perpetrator, and will Bruncliffe be left unscathed, or will the village be scarred forever by the fallout of this last(?) investigation?

Popular Dales Detective books to be made for television

I’m so happy I got into these cozy mysteries, they are delightful and the character development is spot on! They get better with each book and we get to see more and more characters that add a lot to the story – old people, a rich guy, questionable characters, all together shady characters, a fun as hell cleaner/maid, and so much more! This is the eighth book in the Dales Detective series and follows almost directly on after the events of the previous book. I think that it would be quite difficult to enjoy this one without having read the previous books in the series. The landscape – the gorgeous ondulating landscape draws you in and I loved the characters. There was also a more serious story – one man returning to face his past and his father and everything was nicely and neatly wrapped up – although with just enough threads to leave you wanting more. I have not read this series before and what an omission that has turned out to be. I thoroughly enjoyed Date with Evil, which is an amusing cosy with a sharp edge that doesn’t shy away from the worst in human nature.
