About this deal

Owen Gleiberman of Entertainment Weekly gave the film a "D", saying it "starts out as a neo-Pygmalion comedy" and with "its tough-hooker heroine, it can work as a feminist version of an upscale princess fantasy." Gleiberman also said it "pretends to be about how love transcends money," but "is really obsessed with status symbols." [40] On its twentieth anniversary, Gleiberman wrote another article, saying that while he felt he was right, he would have given it a "B" today. [41] Carina Chocano of The New York Times said the movie "wasn't a love story, it was a money story. Its logic depended on a disconnect between character and narrative, between image and meaning, between money and value, and that made it not cluelessly traditional but thoroughly postmodern." A very successful, wealthy lawyer, Edward Lewis, hires a beautiful and unlikely prostitute, Vivian Ward (Julia Roberts), from Sunset Blvd to bring along to various business events. An attraction developes between the two, and Edward finds it harder and harder to let the infectious, kind-hearted Vivian go. Pretty Woman – Golden Globes". HFPA. The song works better in the film than it does on its own, but the video is an amusing historical relic.

Obviously, the movie is entirely predictable and about as far from reality as possible, but both leads offer great performances and the writing is better-than-average for the genre. Although Marshall lets the movie run too long for it's own good (something he does with just about every one of his movies), he does manage to make conventional elements seem mostly charming and easily accepted. The movie does look dated 15 years later, but it still stands up as a whole pretty well.

What to know

Pretty Woman". Rotten Tomatoes. Archived from the original on January 2, 2013 . Retrieved November 20, 2023. Another working title for the film was "3000" or "Three Thousand," referring to the amount of money Julia Roberts' character was paid for her services. Audio: Dolby Digital 5.1 English or DD 2.0 French. The 5.1 sounds adequately crisp and inviting. Volume levels are balanced well between the dialogue and the pop tunes. Optional subtitles are available in English, French, and Spanish. Production Featurette (SD, 4 minutes) - If it weren't for a few isolated comments by Marshall, Gere, and Roberts, this bland featurette would be little more than an extended trailer. As it stands, it's not even deep enough to be called a puff piece. Much as I feel I probably should, I find it hard to dislike Pretty Woman. As formulaic and push-button-y as it is, it still houses some truly enjoyable movie-star chemistry, just enough laughs to keep me happy, and a cuddly-sweet happy ending that fits perfectly with the puddle-deep yet likable presentation.

"Burt Reynolds Reflects on the Roles He's Turned Down". The Hollywood Reporter . Retrieved April 13, 2023. SOUND: "Pretty Woman" is presented in Dolby Digital 5.1. The audio presentation seemed like a bare basic edition of a "comedy mix". The audio is spread mildly across the front speakers, but doesn't have much in the way of oomph behind the music. There's not much detail to the presentation, and audio quality is just average, with somewhat thin-sounding dialogue. VIDEO: "Pretty Woman" is presented by Touchstone in 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen on this release, an improvement over the prior release's non-anamorphic effort. Sharpness and detail aren't remarkable in any way, but the definition level at least appeared consistent and pleasing. All the extras from the 2005 15th anniversary DVD have been ported over, but its pretty lightweight stuff, both literally and figuratively. It's about time someone produced a retrospective documentary on the film, but I guess we'll have to wait for the movie's 25th. All the video is in 480i/MPEG-2. The presentation didn't impress too greatly, but it wasn't really flawed in any way, either. A couple of tiny instances of edge enhancement appeared, and the print showed a moment or two of some minor grain and dirt. The print, however, was otherwise clean and clear. Colors looked bright and nicely saturated, with no smearing or other concerns.a b Reimann, Tom (April 25, 2019). "Surprising Behind-the-Scenes Facts about Pretty Woman". Collider.
