Born into the Romany Community, she went from riches to rags – unlike Annie, who goes the opposite way – and ended up living in London where she witnessed at first-hand the dark underbelly of the city. She said: “I wrote this straight crime thriller and I was very poor at the time and huddled under a duvet on the sofa writing this thing. But with strong female characters, an emotive plot of an unloved brother and a thrilling narrative, it turned out to be a great read! Having been used to a married life full of nothing but dull misery, she could admit – only to herself, mind – that she had gone a little wild when all that was over. Both had troubled beginnings, and it is easy to empathise with their situation, even while you cringe at the lengths they’re prepared to go to, to protect themselves and their assets. The announcement of Never Go Back also marks the 15-year anniversary since the release of her first published book, Dirty Game.
