About this deal

the inexplicable connection that we just feel, right away, to some people, when with the vast sea of humans we have to work hard to get anywhere at all. When you’re a teenager, there’s definitely ‘cool’ hobbies, but it was so refreshing to see people who were so engrossed in these fictional worlds – definitely people I would have been friends with had I known them at school! This book was everything that I love in YA contemporary: a coming of age story exploring the complexities of family, friendship and first love, alongside an equal balance of lighthearted teen fun and touching moments. The characters are all over the age of 18, but there were numerous times where it felt like they were younger.

Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for providing me with a free eARC of this book in exchange for an honest review!Exploring the bonds of friendship, family, fandom, culture and queer community, this is a story about finding who you really are at the heart of all the things you love. I also liked how the author included queer people from various generations (which made for some really heartwarming moments) and discussed the nuances of being queer in a family of color.

I feel like we often see a focus on coming out as the end goal in a book for the character to live happily ever after, and I love how this took the pressure off.I was lucky enough to be given early access to Cynthia So’s debut novel ‘If You Still Recognise Me’, an incredible queer coming of age story, that had me so hooked I finished it in a single sitting! A beautiful and intricately layered tale of friendship, fandom and finding yourself – I absolutely adored it. I loved the blend, and appreciated that it wasn’t just a smooth ride — because that’s not life, usually. While I grew up in Tumblr fandoms (and therefore can definitely relate to a lot of Elsie's online experiences), it's not really my favourite thing to read about anymore.

It handles all of these brilliantly, and despite the difficult topics it is still a really heartwarming read.

There’s this wonderful blend of coming of age and figuring yourself out, mixed with navigating changing friendships, mixed with tentative romance, mixed with identity and queerness. I loved visiting different cities in England through Elsie's eyes and personally could relate to many experiences she made (in contrast to many books set in the US) with her friends and family. Suffused with queer wistfulness and the ache to be known, So's debut is as intimate and revelatory as the first touch of a first crush's hand.
