About this deal

I did not enjoy the author’s style of writing at all. It felt extremely stilted to me. The parts of the book in direct speech, flip from one speaker to the another with no indication of who is saying what and the actual dialogue felt like it had been written by someone with a lot less talent and experience than Ms La Plante! I have nearly all Lynda’s books they just get better and better the dark room is one of the best Reply Lynda La Plante (born Lynda Titchmarsh) is a British author, screenwriter, and erstwhile actress (her performances in Rentaghost and other programmes were under her stage name of Lynda Marchal), best known for writing the Prime Suspect television crime series. Overall, this is another good addition to the series. There’s a lot of ground covered in both cases and they are resolved well. A very poor rating because this book was an absolute chore to persevere through. This is the first book that I have read from this author as it was handed down to me and will be the last that I read from this author.

The book also appears to normalise excessive use of sleeping pills. One of the characters works at a hospital so if she does it then it must be fine. She formed her own television production company, La Plante Productions, in 1994 and as La Plante Productions she wrote and produced the sequel to Widows, the equally gutsy She's Out (ITV, 1995). The name "La Plante" comes from her marriage to writer Richard La Plante, author of the book Mantis and Hog Fever. La Plante divorced Lynda in the early 1990s. Just not for me, I’ve read far more exciting murder/police procedural books by much less acclaimed writers (to date), such as Neil Lancaster & Charlie Gallagher that leave this book looking like a ‘Midsomer Murder’.

Pure Evil - Lynda La Plante CBE

I’m thinking of teaching an Osher adult learning course on Lynda La Plante. Any observations about her work most appreciated. Reply Lynda has received a huge amount of awards over her time in the field, including becoming an honorary-member of both the Liverpool John Moores University and British Film Institute. She was also awarded with the Dennis-Potter Writers-Award from the British-Academy of Film and Television Arts, and she received the Edgar-Allan Poe Writer’s Award (not to mention an Emmy) for her mini-series Prime Suspect.

As Warr digs into Rodney's past, Ridley calls pleading for help, now accused of a murder he insists he didn't commit. Any issues with the book list you are seeing? Or is there an author or series we don’t have? Let me know! Over the years I have read a variety of Lynda La Plante’s crime novels and know that she prides herself on accurate portrayals of police procedures. She never disappoints. She must decide if she will risk her life to bring the killer to justice simply to claim the reward, or if she should leave the task to someone more experience, more willing, and more trusting than she will ever be able to trust herself after her difficult and harrowing past. I’m also baffled as to why La Plante chose to throw in some casually anti-trans remarks at various points throughout the book. Reference the pandemic but choose to have your MAIN CHARACTER not only think but actually say transphobic things is just… What was she thinking
