This is so not a children's book; it's very adult in its themes and in its prose. Yet, it doesn't quite ascend into the places it could have gone - the magical realism masking the utter tragedy of the Revolution; nor the fast-paced thrill ride of a Russian spy novel (personally I would have loved the former) - or live up to its full potential. Blood Red Snow" was hampered by the uneven quality of the writing. This book could be elevated to the pantheon of great war books with a little help. While maps are supplied, they are amateurishly drawn and it's difficult to separate German from Russian movements. In addition, because it's a diary, it's really choppy. Also, the author writes as if he is a spectator and not a participant. Very little internal thought processes are included. He's almost like a robot going through the motions. Although he mentions friends and comrades, he never fleshes them out and a few passing words about how he misses them are not enough to evoke the idea that he has any real feeling for them. They seem to be just bit players. There is also a little too much of the "who me?" writing where the author tries to deny or absolve himself of any wrong-doing. It seems unlikely that he was not at least a witness, if not a participant, to a host of travesties and yet he often plays himself off as a victim, something we see in much German war literature.
