Wiseman, Andreas (11 April 2023). ""'Slow Horses' Season Four: Hugo Weaving, Joanna Scanlan & Ruth Bradley Among Cast To Join Gary Oldman In Apple Spy Series, Filming Underway" ". Deadline. Archived from the original on 11 April 2023 . Retrieved 11 April 2023. And the characters are engaging (even Lamb) and likeable (except Lamb) despite their failings and weaknesses. One of the things I liked was the minutiae and inter-personal squabbles of the office spaces. Lamb who might be “scavenging his underlings’ food” when not dozing in his office, or Shirley pressing her ear to Ho’s door to find out what was going on, or Ho’s territorial claims:

Lamb – I do feel I have to include him – there is much I dislike about him but he is also engaging and loyal when his team are threatened (by anyone other than himself) and yes he does, as The Guardian interview with Herron suggests, bear echoes of Falstaff, unlikeable but compelling in a horrible way.Dead Lions is the second book in a planned series of three about the inhabitants of Slough House in central London, the first, Slow Horses, having been a finalist for the Crime Writers’ Association Steel Dagger Award in 2010. Slough House and slow horses are associated by a pun which is deliberately not very good. Its inhabitants are members of MI5 – not the real Premier League MI5, which is near Regents Park, but its poor Division 2 relation at an outpost in the city. Slow horses is the name given to those members of the service whose careers have been blighted by an error of some kind. Ho, Dander and Standish deduce that Chernitsky never left the UK, and just planted his phone in the luggage of a touring folk band at the airport. Using his cover as a journalist from The Times, River befriends Kelly, the daughter of the suspected sleeper agent Duncan Tropper. He discovers through her that Tropper and his wife Alex used to be student radicals who moved to the village from London. The family invite him to dinner and introduce him to their visiting friend Leo, who is actually Chernitsky. If you like your suspense novels told with a smart dash of wit and sarcasm, filled with lots of twists and turns, Herron’s your man.” For a moment Lamb has the uncomfortable sensation that this mouse is staring into a past he has tried to bury, or peering into a future he’d sooner forget. And then he blinks, and the mouse is nowhere, if it was ever there at all. ‘What this place needs is a cat,’ grumbles Lamb, but there’s no one there to hear him.” Filming of the first series began on 30 November 2020 in England, and continued into February 2021, with Gary Oldman and Kristin Scott Thomas spotted on set in Westminster, London. [9] In July 2021, filming continued in Stroud, Gloucestershire. [10] It was originally intended to film earlier in 2020 but was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. [11] [9] But Dead Lions holds greater value than simply its humour. In addition to the many characters’ very modern and entertaining screw-ups and ingenious plot entanglements, the novel exudes a wonderful sense of irony and world-weary wisdom that comes to the fore just when it’s needed. And thankfully, Dead Lions does not have a Disney-ending, so we can look forward to more from this ragtag bunch in the future. The politics and machinations at Regents’ Park, where an “audit” was underway and Diana Taverner’s deflection of a critical decision at a critical time to Roger Barrowby who was conducting the audit was masterful… as was his leaving gift. There are many red herrings and even more twists. At least two stories running – that may or may not be connected. Slough House inhabitants are put in danger – some survive, but not all. Cliff hangers are scattered throughout. White, Peter (13 March 2023). " 'Slow Horses': Gary Oldman & His Slough House Spies Tease Season 3 As Apple TV+ Drama Series Heads Into Production For Season 4 – Watch". Deadline. Archived from the original on 27 March 2023 . Katherine Waterston as Alison Dunn, a MI5 agent who uncovers a dark secret at the heart of the agency [4] Marek Vašut as Andre Chernitsky, a former KGB operative and assassin who operated during the Cold War.

Forget about solving all these crimes; the signal triumph here is (spoiler) the heroine’s survival. Dead Lions” was mostly successful on that front. It is an enjoyable story, and the characters that were established in that first book take some steps forward here. There are also some new characters introduced that show how easy it will be for Herron to freshen up the mix at Slough House as the series moves along. The new characters fit in well, and you get the sense there is more to them that will be explored in subsequent stories. There are also a few curveballs tossed into the narrative that raise the stakes of the game for all of the characters. I wont spoil anything except to say that while there is an element of humor to the story, it doesn’t mean there isnt real danger afoot. Wiseman, Andreas (11 April 2023). " Slow Horses Season 4: Hugo Weaving, Joanna Scanlan & Ruth Bradley Among Cast To Join Gary Oldman In Apple Spy Series; Filming Underway". Deadline Hollywood. Archived from the original on 11 April 2023 . Retrieved 11 April 2023.If you enjoyed “Slow Horses”, then there will be a lot here for you to enjoy. I preferred the first book a bit more, if only because it sets the tone, and I found it to be a bit more humorous than this second book. Series are always a tough read for me, because I’ll read the first book, love it, and then want to dive right into the second. Oftentimes, the second book is good, but it is ALWAYS difficult to recapture the elements that draw you in to that first book. There’s a sameness that can wear thin with too much of a good thing, unless an author is good enough to build upon the things that you love while showing you something new. In season two, long-buried Cold War secrets emerge which threaten to bring carnage to the streets of London. When a liaison with Russian villains takes a fatal turn, our hapless heroes must overcome their individual failings and raise their spy game in a race to prevent a catastrophic incident. A suspenseful, professional-grade north country procedural whose heroine, a deft mix of compassion and attitude, would be welcome to return and tie up the gaping loose end Box leaves. The unrelenting cold makes this the perfect beach read. As Lamb investigates Bow’s death, and as Guy and Harper draw closer to the date of Webb’s meeting with the oligarch, their separate plotlines begin to converge, leaving readers wondering who’s conning whom, and to what end.
