About this deal

If you look at the page we first meet the characters Ray and Ben, you will see Ben riding on a horse drawn hoe. NOW toured the iconic poppy sculptures Wave and Weeping Window by artist Paul Cummins and designer Tom Piper, during the First World War centenary between 2015 and 2018.

Radio credits include Private Peaceful for BBC Radio 2 and her series for Barry Humphries Forgotten Musical Masterpieces was listed as one of the top 30 artistic triumphs of 2016 by the Telegraph. The poppy came to represent the immeasurable sacrifice made by his comrades and quickly became a lasting memorial to those who died in World War One and later conflicts. This is a historical activity for your class to complete, gaining insight to what was going on at the time in which the story was set. The illustrations are fantastic with good use of colour to represent the emotion and atmosphere within the drawings.

I should add that she bought it for me because I teach 4 and 5 year olds and believe history is integral to American educational curriculum. She was born in Devon and brought up in Nigeria and England, but now lives and works in London and Yorkshire. It is an accessible and poignantly told story that deals sensitively with the horror of war and the enduring nature of friendship.

With echoes of some of the great war poems and reference to some of the poets who wrote them, it is the perfect book to accompany work about WWI and remembrance. Through the words and the pictures we have tried to recreate the sense of duty and pride of the time and to celebrate the human condition.

Set in a bygone age, the carefree childhood of Ben and his best friend Ray becomes a distant memory when they join the army to serve their country. Where are the Poppies Now sought to reunite digitally the 888,246 ceramic poppies from artist Paul Cummins and designer Tom Piper’s 2014 installation, Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red originally staged by Historic Royal Palaces at HM Tower of London in 2014. The book is written in rhyming text and is a wonderful tribute to all the men and boys who made sacrifices to protect their countries. Know where the people and events they study fit within a chronological framework and identify similarities and differences between ways of life in different periods. Scarlet corn poppies (popaver rhoeas) grow naturally in conditions of disturbed earth throughout Western Europe. One final element that really stands out for me in this book, is the importance of friendship and how it can withstand the most traumatic experiences; one that can be compared and contrasted to the brotherly love in Michael Morpurgo's novel, Private Peaceful. All illustrations are taken from books written by Hilary Robinson with illustrations by Jane Abbott ( Sarah the Spider's Christmas Surprise and How to Teach a Dragon Manners), Belinda Worsley ( Batty Betty's Spells), Melanie Sharp ( Ted's Party Bus), Mandy Stanley ( The Princess's Secret Letters), Ross Collins ( Freddie's Fears) and Tim Archbold ( Flynn Flies High). I particularly liked how the poem progressed throughout the book adding another couple of lines per page. Where The Poppies Now Grow by Hilary Robinson and Martin Impey is published by Strauss House Productions.

Worn on Armistice Day, now Remembrance Sunday, the White Poppy was produced by the Co-operative Wholesale Society because the Royal British Legion had refused to be associated with its manufacture. A poetic book where each page adds another line or two to the continuous poem, repeated on each page. This resource focuses on some of the useful vocabulary used in the story for your class to explore further. The friends’ later experiences on the battlefield seem all the more dreadful when contrasted with their carefree childhood. This Starting Points resource will give you everything you need to plan a beautiful book-based unit of work for children in KS2. When read with the illustrations the poems comes to life and we can see the joy in Ben and Ray's faces turn into fear and sadness as they have to face the harsh and tragic events of war.
