Street Fighter II spawned a series of revisions, each refining the play mechanics, graphics, character roster, and other aspects of the game. The first update, Street Fighter II: Champion Edition, was released in arcades in March 1992. It rebalances characters' power levels, allows both players in two-player matches to select the same character (distinguished by alternate costume colors) and allows players to choose the four previously computer-only boss characters. Subsequently the Street Fighter 2 arcade machine had many firsts including adding perspective on the floor. For the time being, most games of the time had only 2 or 3 layers of scrolling.
