The childproof clip meant I could attach it to my backpack to take it with me on the go, it clips on to the back seat of my car if I’ve got little friends strapped in back there and the breadth of sound options is really impressive. The device’s white noise function can be set to run for as little as one minute and as long as 23 hours and 59 minutes (aka until the very moment you decide to restart your nighttime routine). There are nine colours of noise available on Headspace and I’m still not sure which of them is best for me.

The light can double up as a reading lamp and you can set just one alarm or schedule your whole week with different wake up times. To be honest, I still felt a tad startled when the noise sounded at 6:30am, so on morning number two, I went straight in with the brightest setting – and that's when I realised what all the fuss was about. The Hatch app is pretty easy to use once you get the hang of it, and I appreciate that you can preview how things will look and sound before you add it to your routines. Some of the sounds are frankly bizarre (bleating goats are an acquired taste at 6:30am) but there are lots of calmer options to choose from such as waves, thunderstorms, and blackbirds.It’s slow to skip through the sounds but it has memory so, once you find your sweet spot, you don’t need to mess around. It's available in three different finishes to suit your interior style (including a cool turmeric hue), and it wakes you up gently at the alarm time when the light is at its brightest.

Unlike some other models on the market, the watch face doesn't dim in the dark, meaning you can see the green glowing digital clock in the dark. Hatch+ unlocks a world of personalized tools, content and experiences that let you improve your sleep. But if you’re a heavier sleeper, you may need the addition of sound to rouse you from your slumbers. If you have a baby, any low-decibel sound machine will work (see the note at the beginning of this guide on safe volume), but Raptbaby says its machine goes a step further with neuroscientist-designed soundtracks that promote sleep and help develop the “ neuronal connections that are critical to language development in young children.I think this is the longest I’ve gone without snoozing my alarm on my iPhone or Apple Watch, which I’ve ultimately disabled now that I trust Hatch to wake me up on time.
