About this deal

I know it can be a contentious topic, which is why I was so looking forward to seeing how it would be explored in this story. That’s not what one would expect in a mystery involving assisted suicides, but this book is completely delicious and quite charming.

Unfortunately at one exit something goes wrong and this unleashes a catastrophic chain of events that challenges Felix and Amanda. I thought it would be a fast paced thriller, and looking a some other reviews, it seems like I wasn't the only one!As a member of the Exiteers, an anonymous, secret group in Devon that supports the right to die, 75-year-old widower Felix Pink witnesses the suicides of terminally ill patients. Awkward, but a potential learning mistake, until they discover the real client is still alive, and they’ve assisted his ailing, deadbeat son into the hereafter.

Michaelides seems also to be dipping into the world of Edgar Allan Poe, offering an unreliable narrator who feels more like a literary exercise. However, one day when Felix is working with a new Exiteer, something goes terribly wrong and Felix finds himself on the wrong side of the law. Except on his most recent mission, something goes wrong and Felix finds himself on the run for murder. The beginning of this book was riveting, and I was immediately sucked into this interesting and unusual premise. An investigation starts that includes the dead mans father, son, Felix, the other Exiteer, and some other people.

I'm new to Belinda Bauer's world, but I hope she'll invite me to visit occasionally, as I have really enjoyed the time I've spent there so far. Everyone has a mobile phone phone these days, even oldies, but main character was still dependent on his landline. Many things are not as they seem in this novel, which is very funny, with quirky characters and unexpected situations. It’s full of wit and humour and though there are occasions in the drama that I know i shouldn’t have been laughing but it’s so darned funny and you can’t help yourself. It's warm and funny and dark and sad all at the same time, beautifully plotted and paced, and peopled with fabulous, complex characters that have drawn me right into their lives. He comes from a family of criminals and degenerates and keeps this fact a secret from his police co-workers. And Felix, being an honest engine kinda guy, tries to right a wrong at the same time as trying to solve the whodunn what and why. Elderly Felix Pink, whose wife fought a years long battle with dementia, has been recruited into a secret society who help the terminally ill put a painless end to themselves. The narrator of this audiobook has done a very good job, I don’t think I would have read it otherwise.

While Felix and Calvin differ, both find themselves stuck in their pasts, unable to live in the present. Brooks presents a case for making room for Bigfoot in the world while peppering his narrative with timely social criticism about bad behavior on the human side of the conflict: The explosion of Rainier might have been better forecast had the president not slashed the budget of the U.We learn about Kate’s possibly stalling career and Leo’s plan to apply to acting schools against his mother’s wishes. This is one of those stories that grew on me as I read and became embroiled in the characters lives. A story that is unswerving in its character-based narrative, its contemporary nature makes the reader face up to the obscene realities of death and grief. For such a risk averse man, he unexpectedly found himself stumbling through a serious of catastrophes, and I did feel for him.
