About this deal

Square Peg: My Story and What It Means for Raising Innovators, Visionaries, and Out-of-the-Box Thinkers by Todd Rose, with Katherine Ellison, certainly proves that we are all special and unique, especially in the way we approach learning. With 53 different perspectives, some of which offer contradictory views and others that repeat what has already been covered, the book at times left me feeling a bit muddled, wondering which viewpoint was the most valid or credible and whether repetition lent certain arguments more weight. and again when his girlfriend got pregnant and he decided that it behooved him to become responsible. Square Peg is the story of how he went from being a failure at the very bottom of the educational system to a Harvard graduate student. Behavior is an extremely complex system that originates from the interaction of a person's biology, past experiences, and immediate context.

Written by Fran Morgan with Ellie Costello and edited by Ian Gilbert, Square Pegs: Inclusivity, compassion and fitting in – a guide for schools is a book for educators who find themselves torn between a government/Ofsted narrative around behaviour, attendance and attainment, and their own passion for supporting square pegs and their families. Most schools cherish and value the children who have special educational needs; there are also some who do not place inclusion high on their list of priorities, and exclude or marginalise children rather than provide the mental health and therapeutic support they need.I participate in a Facebook group where the discussion centers largely around learning differences in students, and ideas for helping those students receive an education that works for them. The book is set out in five parts, covering insights into individual cases, legal issues, relationships, mental health and alternative options. It’s a book of confidence for professionals and parents alike to rise above the distracting noise about attendance, exclusion and ‘what works’ narratives.

After 14 years working in this field to support other parents and effect change, she has now retired to pick up the reins of her copywriting business.I'm sure all kids love goofing around on computers, but the idea that it instantly makes learning awesome is a false one. It’s a must-read for everyone with a vision of an education system that can be ‘fixed’ through collaboration and brave actions. he quotes Einstein saying you can't judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree; (4) feedback loops can send an individual into a spiral of self-destruction OR in a positive direction.

Chapter after chapter listed ways in which different educators found ways of making things work for their schools. It is when square pegs choose to be silent and when they choose to communicate that we must pay careful attention to, for the sake of all of us. The editors have done an excellent job of curating experiences, personal stories and expert insights that make their book a must-read for anyone seeking to understand, appreciate and nourish the unique qualities that make each student special. Like Square Peg, I want all schools to see the potential in all children and provide the support they need. They highlight the continuing inadequate responses to promote effective access, inclusion and strategies for engagement and progress for a growing number of learners. If you need to read something for an education or psych class, this is a short, easy read that should fit the bill nicely. I don't feel like I really learned anything mind-blowingly new from this book, but I did enjoy reading again about how intelligence is so diverse and has everything to do with context.
