About this deal

The magic of Arranmore island is truly unique, as is the ability for Fionn and his grandfather to revisit different layers – or points in the island’s history – by burning candles made from previous Storm Keepers. Readers will be swept away by the setting and atmosphere of Arranmore as Fionn discovers its history and secrets, leading to a dramatic ending that will leave children clambering for book two. As Fionn discovers his grandfather has been the Storm Keeper all along, an incredible world of magic unfolds before his eyes, starting with a battle to become the next Storm Keeper and an underground menace waiting for Fionn's arrival to the island, and carrying on with terrifying creatures called Soulstalkers arriving on the island and their scary all-powerful sorceress Morrigan. I like how Tara goes missing. I like how it shows how the granddad becomes forgetful. Shelby is my favourite character. She is fun and happy but sad when she wants to be. I would like to see more of the story, maybe when Fionn is older and his children have adventures. I think nine- to 14-year-olds would like this. I rate it 10/10.

I like how Fionn and Tara’s relationship started to grow throughout the story. I also like that at the start you read the letter and as the story went on you understood it more. I would like to read the sequels and see what happens next. I got a little bit scared when their granddad forgets things. I would definitely give the book 10/10.Catherine Doyle is one of the UK's best children's author, with this series selling in multiple languages across the world, and has also written The Lost Girl King and the exciting YA Twin Crowns books. Doyle infuses every aspect of the novel with the richness of Irish folklore and culture: readers will be captivated by descriptions of the Island's beauty and magical history . . . [a] modern yet timeless fantasy.

It’s Fionn’s first visit, and not only has Tara kept loads of information from Fionn, she abandons him with their grandfather pretty much from the moment they arrive. Left to himself, Fionn ends up learning more about the island and who his grandfather really is – the Storm Keeper whose role is to protect the island from a dark magic buried centuries ago. I read this book as a bedtime story to my 8 year old. We both really enjoyed this book. It is about a boy and his sister who go to visit their grandfa... Once in a generation, Arranmore Island chooses a new Storm Keeper to wield its power and keep its magic safe from enemies. The time has come for Fionn's grandfather, a secretive and eccentric old man, to step down. Soon, a new Keeper will rise. But, deep underground, someone has been waiting for Fionn. As the battle to become the island's next champion rages, a more sinister magic is waking up, intent on rekindling an ancient war. Catherine Doyle grew up beside the Atlantic Ocean in the west of Ireland. Her love of reading began with great Irish myths and legends, and fostered in her an ambition to one day write her own. The Storm Keeper’s Island is her debut middle-grade novel and was inspired by her real-life ancestral home of Arranmore Island (where her grandparents grew up), and the adventures of her many sea-faring ancestors. After living in Dublin City for two years, Catherine is now based in Galway but spends a lot of her time in the US and London. From the moment Fionn and Tara’s feet touch the ground on their hereditary island home of Arranmore, they are involved in a twisting, time-leaping, family mystery. Who is the Storm Keeper and why is Grandfather’s cottage filled from floor to ceiling with strange candles? More to the point, who will be the next Storm Keeper? Rooted in Irish mythology, this is nevertheless a modern tale navigating the choppy waters of family rivalries, mental health and old age seen through the eyes of young people. As Grandfather’s memory fades, Fionn must figure out not only what his role is on the island but also how to work with the island itself - and against those who would steal its power - to keep ancient horrors at bay.
