Aberfeldy is best known for its significant contributions to Dewar’s Scotch blends (Dewar’s being the distillery’s corporate owner), but it’s also the home to its own line of single malts, with bottlings reaching as old as 40 years of age. Situated uniquely between the Highlands and the Lowlands region of Scotland — technically either the Midlands or the Lower Highlands, depending on who you ask — Aberfeldy is known for producing mainstream, approachable whiskies with broad appeal. It’s not that he’s evil, but while the 16-year-old Aberfeldy whiskey is already very velvety, soft and spicy, these 12 months of snoozing in Madeira Malmsey and Bual wine barrels weigh it down, making it lose some momentum. and aromatic cleansing. Of course, it is a conscious stylistic choice, the final passage in Sherry, Porto, Madeira or Marsala barrels helps to broaden the spectrum and volume of the whiskey’s aroma, enriches it. It adds wonderful nutty notes of dried fruit, but at the same time makes the fruit of this mellifluous and down very overripe distillate even more syrupy and spicy. And sincerely, proposing such an opulent and sumptuous apparatus and structure with only 40 degrees is a bit counterproductive. The problem with this whiskey is that it cannot be very dynamic, it relaxes and is slow in development. A higher gradation would have added the ideal fire to set off the spark. Nose: Bright green apple, honeydew and sauvignon blanc grapes with the slightest ethanol burn peeking through. Nothing in the Terms shall exclude or limit our liability for fraudulent misrepresentation or for death or personal injury resulting from gross negligence or willful misconduct by us.Appearance: Oddly enough, the appearance of both the 12 year and 16 year is identical. Radiant golden straw. Charming nose that envelops you with warmth, spices, splendid medicinal notes, candied oranges, orange marmalade and then this fruit dripping with honey and butter. Caramel and toffee to no end, licorice, vanilla and spicy kit to finish. On the nose: gorgeously honeyed, with exceptionally strong floral notes. Very nice indeed, and very close to the Wemyss Malts single cask I tried a little while ago. So yet again, old-fashioned roses – and intensely so, almost to the point of it being a wax candle interpretation of that scent. Beeswax table polish. Cider – mead, perhaps. Final Thoughts: A more thoughtful, weighty dram than the 12 year. The additional sherry casking comes through, but isn’t overbearing and works wonderfully with the fruity spirit, adding a richness and level of depth not present in the 12 year. While the bottlings seem to have a very different purpose in life, they are at once unique and complimentary. The 16 year is a wonderful addition to the Aberfeldy line up and surely worth seeking out.The Service has been prepared by us solely for information purposes to Members and the Service is based on information we consider reliable and we obtain the contents of the Service from a number of different third party sources (including Contributions), but we do not endorse, support, represent, warrant or guarantee the completeness, truthfulness, accuracy, or reliability of the Services and any information therein. While its “ Exceptional Cask” releases are bottled at cask strength, the three whiskies we look at today — representing the core of Aberfeldy’s single malt lineup, all formally relaunched a few years ago — are all bottled at 80 proof. All three are aged in a combination of ex-bourbon casks, first fill oloroso sherry casks, and refill casks which are then married together before bottling — though note the additional aging on the 16 year old below. If we decide not to exercise or enforce any right or provision of these Terms, such decision shall not constitute a waiver of such right or provision. It’s not a rejection, it’s a good Highland single malt whiskey, just a little more effort and it would have been excellent. We are doing the hair and the counter hair, also because if you consider that the cost is about 95-100 euros for 1 liter of whiskey, you can’t complain.
