About this deal

We really need to kick that notion into the long grass and have these simple manipulatives available for all children, all the time. It provides valuable insight (for the learner and those working with them) into the challenges being neurodiverse can have on the acquisition of maths, but then offers essential tips on overcoming these challenges to achieve success. In addition to covering the more obvious specific learning challenges, it also delves into topics such as growth mindsets, learning styles, and metacognition. Packed to the brim with useful strategies and practical tips, it is aimed at those overlooked by more traditional styles of teaching. It is the driving force behind successful strategies and interventions for many neurodiverse children.

I could get on board with this chapter, the grid method is common, easily used wherever I am (even if my hand drawn grids look a little tipsy) and quite simply, simple. As a specialist dyscalculia teacher who isn't a secondary maths teacher, I'm really excited about using this book and can already see that my older pupils are going to benefit so much from it. With everything tailored to suit young people who think and learn differently, this GCSE maths study guide has all you need to improve your maths skills…and maybe even learn to love maths! Whilst manipulatives for maths are commonplace in primary school, they are much scarcer in secondary school and if used at all will be often associated with the stigma of ‘having to use the equipment’ something that is reserved for the children that don’t understand. The author of this book has collated the strategies for teaching that are particularly suited to the needs of neurodiverse students, and they have presented it in this volume. I highly recommend this comprehensive book for every neurodiverse learner working towards GCSE Maths.
