About this deal

Only a couple of PC motherboards support Thunderbolt 2, but PCI-Express add-in cards can upgrade existing systems. Whether you go down this route or plug the G-RAID Studio into a Mac, it will produce blisteringly fast transfer speeds. With Dual Thunderbolt 3 ports, you can conveniently daisy chain up to 5 additional devices to stay connected to multiple drives, 4K displays, and more, through a single connection to your computer. High-Speed Data Transfers RAID storage can be handy for companies looking to scale their on-premise data infrastructure. Balancing your investments in cloud and disk-based storage systems is essential in an increasingly hybrid computing world. They provide the perfect mix of hardware and virtualization so that you can scale freely without compromising on control.

For all your demanding workloads and mission-critical content, you can rely on the power and enhanced reliability of the Ultrastar™ enterprise-class 7200RPM hard drives inside. Overview

Typical RAID setups are referred to as levels. There were initially five of these, but there are now many more, including many nested and several non-standard (often proprietary) levels. The reason? It all boils down to the two hard drives inside the G RAID, which are spinning at 7,200rpm. This means that much of Thunderbolt's vaunted 10Gb/s bandwidth is all but redundant when running a single device.

G-Technology’s high-capacity G-RAID Studio is designed for Mac users; it uses Thunderbolt 2, which is found on MacBooks and iMacs, and is styled to ape the Mac Pro workstation. It will work with a Thunderbolt- equipped PC, but there’s a performance penalty. The two hot-swappable 3.5in disks spin at 7,200rpm. You pull the disks out vertically from the top of the unit, with a pop-out cover hiding the drive trays from view. Each drive is secured to a disk caddy with four screws. RAID will increase performance by enabling users to access and write information from several drives rather than a single disk. In addition, when you opt for hardware RAID, it will have extra RAM for use as a cache, decreasing the pressure on the physical machine and enhancing overall performance.

Key Features

As previously stated, mirroring is the duplication of data over several disks, striping is the distribution of data across multiple disks, and error correction is the storage of redundant data to enable the detection and possible repair of errors (also called fault tolerance). Depending on the system’s needs, one may use any or all of these approaches in various RAID configurations. For maximum performance, G-RAID™ 2 comes ready to go in RAID 0 and can be configured to RAID 1 (mirroring) or JBOD for ultimate flexibility. 5-year Limited Warranty Like any Thunderbolt product worth its salt, it comes with two ports so you can connect it to other devices in a daisy-chain. Sadly it doesn't come with a Thunderbolt cable, so you'll have to buy one before you can use it. A minor inconvenience maybe, but unlike USB, Thunderbolt hasn't been around long enough for us to have a drawer full of spare cables. See More: What Is a Data Catalog? Definition, Examples, and Best Practices How did RAID storage come into being? The real reason you might be willing to shell out this kind of money for an external drive (along with paying more for a cable and probably upgrading your motherboard to get a Thunderbolt port) is the speed. The G RAID with Thunderbolt had better be fast, right?
