I loved the message—sometimes I too am guilty of "devouring" books at such a gluttonous rate that I don't have time to properly digest them or savor them. Like the incredible book eating boy, I have a desire to consume and know everything. It's enough to make you "boke", ha ha... (That's an inside joke for people who read this.) The boy learns the importance of slowing down and really taking things in. Jeffers was born in Australia in 1977 and brought up in Belfast. He studied visual communication at the University of Ulster, and graduated in 2001. Jeffers became passionate about making picture books when he began to understand the subtle relationship between words and pictures –‘that was what excited me. Until I got really involved, I hadn't realised how just a few words can totally change the meaning of a picture.’ Now living in New York, he works as a painter, designer, printmaker and installation artist, but remains very busy making picture books. Once there was a sad, lonely penguin who appeared at the door of a young boy. The boy decided he must be lost, so he set off to find his home. I suppose this isn’t a totally original idea. I’ve seen this premise played out before in other picture books, but the story here is so endearing. I like that Henry wants to be smart, and that Henry likes books, and that he figures out another way to use them.

This new video of Oliver has recently been released and it will allow your children to get a glimpse into the artist's studio. Your children are such great artists! I love their work. An illustrator I would like to recommend is Jeannie Baker. Her latest book, Mirror, is a true masterpiece in my opinion. I think the kids will love to examine her techniques and try for themselves. Also, take a look at Ellie Sandall's Birdsong (UK writer/illustrator.) Oliver Jeffers' work takes many forms.
